Colonialism Never Left
Womai Song
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Throughout Africa’s historical and contemporary experience, women have wielded political influence and distinguished themselves at the service of their communities as constituencies and/or individual actors. But they have also been pawns in conflicts. Although sexual violence against women and girls is acknowledged globally as a ubiquitous and atrocious flouting of human rights, this abhorrent phenomenon remains incontrovertible in postcolonial African authoritarian democracies in the throes of internal frictions. This has particularly been the case in the plethora of civil wars that have threatened to derail the destiny of the post-colonial African state. The evolving “Anglophone Cameroon” crisis has again accentuated the plight of women in political wrangles. While warring factions bear some proportion of culpability, available evidence points overwhelmingly to French Cameroon soldiers as the greatest perpetrators of the inhumanity of sexual violence on Anglophone Cameroon women and girls. Employing the indigenous/Native feminist and internal colonialism theories, this paper makes a historical analysis of the psychology of the perpetrators as a counterpoise for the much studied and documented female victims of sexual violence in the Ambazonia war. In the context of this analysis, it argues that the malefactors of this violence constitute for the most part the legacy of Eurocentric patriarchal colonialism in Africa.

The Rise of Positive LGBT-themed Advertisements in the Philippines Is a Good Thing... or Is It?
Tracy Mae Ildefonso
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The stereotypical representations of Filipino LGBT people in Philippine media, like comic relief and sexual deviants, have existed for years, somehow enabling it to be the dominant perception of Filipinos towards LGBT people. Adding to the problem is the absence of the anti-discrimination law that legally protects them, sending a message that they remain unrepresented and non-recognized in the country. Very few media projects showed efforts to showcase them positively through recent advertisements. However, some garnered backlash and censorship. Bench/ commercial in 2018 called "How long can you keep a secret?" successfully caught the Filipino's attention and gained positive responses and support. A few similar LGBT-themed ads followed, making this study interested in people's perceptions. Thus, this research aims to determine the reactions of Filipinos to the recent LGBT-themed advertisements with non-stereotypical messages. The answers were gathered from non-LGBT individuals, through surveys (158 respondents) and LGBT members (25 participants), through focus groups to encapsulate the different perceptions. The study is guided by George Gerbner's Cultivation theory, saying that the more people watch TV, the more they think that their reality and the television world are the same, and David Morley's Relevance Theory, stating that audiences in the same socio-economic group can read media texts differently than those who do not belong to the said group. The study has discovered that while the LGBT community celebrates this, albeit small, good change, the Filipino public remains neutral about the issue.

How to Use the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to Connect with Our Communities of Diverse Languages
Natasha Welcome
Workshop Presentation
Is a language barrier, the ultimate barrier? Can there still be a synergized community in spite of the different languages spoken? It is a common practice to focus on our differences rather than our similarities. It is quite popular to identify what does not work to what does. To answer the opening question, yes, we can connect with others in the face of language diversity. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals create a path to connect with people of different languages and cultures. This interactive workshop will enlighten us with ways to connect. Then participants will get a chance to create activities ideal to their institutions of learning, jobs, communities, etc, using the strategies explored in the session.

Genevieve Honorico
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Blues forms of the Black Self: Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s Cultural Memory is an ekphrastic paper describing a violin concerto in three parts, entitled Blues Form(s) composed by renown musician, composer, arranger, conductor and mentor to the author, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson. The concerto is available to hear and view online at https://youtu.be/iFtwtIom7Zk, https://youtu.be/najvzYykCwc & https://youtu.be/0be4SlLiyWQ . The paper offers, through a short biography of Perkinson, personal recollections of the composer, examples of cultural memory (as defined by Dr. Sam Floyd Jr.) in his work at large, to connect the concerto to symbols of the soul, the Ring of Congo Square, the myth of Brer Rabbit and the funeral tradition common in the southern United States, known as The Second Line.
Political Gaslighting of Trolls Under the Duterte Regime
Janielle Villamera
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
When communication in social media platforms is used as a means for political control, it allows for a culture of truth manipulation and historical distortion to exist. The creation of troll armies as part of the government operations in countering critics and dissidents alike was to engage them in futile discourses. Composed of digital influencers, fake accounts, and algorithmic bots, their goal is to seemingly inflate Duterte’s supporters, while also practicing a messianic culture in public opinion. Examining the psyche of online political trolls during the Duterte regime, this study explores how disinformation campaigns thrived through the social phenomenon of political gaslighting. Danah Boyd’s concept of “attention hacking” elaborated how trolling is used as a psychological warfare against information in digital media spaces. Through a psychological approach, this study discusses the culture of influence, how trolls have the power to manipulate narratives to a convincing degree, which eventually translates to additional voter support. Rather than showing the large comprehensive network of trolling, this study contributes to the moral particularities and justifications that understands the developments of their interpersonal relationships as online political trolls. As the strategies of political deception in populism continues to advance, the troll presence and impact welcomed a wide support base of Duterte that carried over after his regime, which argues trolling as a propaganda used as a response to arguments and grievances, as well as to form beliefs, sentiments, and opinions.

Ben Seyer
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
In 2021, we introduced teaching in the LGBTQIA+ space to include 2nd year direct-Entry cohort from Clayton as well as Gippsland Year A students, numbering approximately 400 students. This year we led an interactive LGBTQIA+ workshop to around 1000 early years medical students across all of the Monash medicine footprint, inclusive of Gippsland, Clayton and Malaysia with a team of academics from across the three sites. The online session included guest speakers with lived experience and expertise, break-out rooms, case-studies, chat, Q&A, literature, resources and tools for student support and learning. The sessions were carefully developed with input from the Monash Equity Group and Queer community, other academics and physicians. This session aimed to show young doctors the challenges experienced by those in the LGBTQIA+ community when accessing healthcare. The workshops were evaluated, appeared to be highly successful as rated by both students and staff. Students reported higher confidence in using LGBTQIA+ terminology following the seminar and were overwhelmingly positive in qualitative feedback. Students particularly appreciated the opportunity to work with their colleagues at other sites and we will share some of the student and staff feedback in our presentation. Outcomes included enhanced LGBTQIA+ patient experiences and healthier marginalised communities, following Monash University’s commitment to ‘inclusive communities with meaningful connections’. This study showcases how important and sensitive topics can be taught across campuses - even internationally in cutting-edge, collaborative and novel ways, making the most of available technology.

The Contribution of the Informal Sector in the Socio-economic Structure of Urban Households
Fafa Sene
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
In developed countries, policy makers consider informal activities as limited in scope and criminal in nature. Opposing this Western view, Keith Hart (1973) analyzes the informal sector, in developing countries, as characterized by an easily-accessed self-employment, and a reliance on own resources in a family enterprise. In Senegal, street vendors contribute directly to the overall level of economic activity, and to the provision of goods and services. They are an integral part of the economy, and their elimination would reduce economic activities and increase poverty. However, there is no real enthusiasm from authorities to handle the street business. The absence of a device capable of identifying all vendors is considered by authorities as loss earnings, because they wrongly believe vendors would manage to get away with tax. African societies need more of an anthropological approach in the way development patterns are adopted. In a conservative society like Senegal, it is the practices developed in households that shape politics and not the opposite. That is the reason why the data collected in this study and within households, although not often considered in development programs, are a solid basis that could allow political authorities to respond, with clarity, to the demands of the populations. This study highlights the socio-economic role of street vending as a social safety net and an outlet for national production.

“We Eat Our Own Pigs”
Haiyi Cheng
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The “emotional schema” in the piggery illustrates the tension between the construction of the pig as a commodity to be sold and as a life to be suffered in the pig farm. The emotional experience of pig farm employees is not only denied and repressed by masculinity, but also shaped and motivated by the economic principles that govern the pig farm, and by the specialised institutions. Through fieldwork in family pig farms and slaughterhouses in southwestern China, we illuminate how economic principles construct pigs as profitable, edible individuals through the daily interactions in pig farms - feeding, breeding, selling - and how state laws requiring of specialisation normalises the cruel side of the farm-to-eat process through institutionalisation, and thus helps the employees to manage their feelings about pigs. Whereby much of the sociological literature on edible meat production focuses on one end of the chain, we analyse the interactions of the meat production process to reveal how economic principles shape and transform the emotional experience of workers through institutionalisation and specialisation in order to reconcile the tensions of commodity and life, and how changes in the structure of the pig industry and price quotations affect the role of economic principles in the construction of the pig. This provides further insights into how economics principles and institutions influences the human-animal work and our emotional experiences with animals.

Designing Diversity by Considering Collective Knowledge
Lea Clara Frömchen Zwick
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
What do you need? With this and similar questions, a local business organization surveys the wishes and needs of its employees before redesigning its office space. The result is a spatial diversity in which there is no uniform spatial concept, but different spaces meet different needs. Even though the focus of the pedagogical doctoral project is on organizational knowledge practices and based on a theoretical framework of tacit as well as explicit knowledge, it has been noticed in the data that knowledge practices are linked to organizational decisions, which in turn are associated with diversity. This can be exemplified by the concept of spatial design mentioned at the beginning of this paper, as different spaces are each designed according to different needs. The connection of knowledge practices and diversity underlines the relevance of the qualitative-reconstructive project, for which narrative interviews, participant observations and supplementary documents are taken into account. All of them are successively analyzed with the documentary method. For the paper, the data from the interviews are particularly relevant, as the analysis reveals a leadership practice in which explicit knowledge of the employees is first obtained and on the basis of which the decision then follows. The study shows how a collective knowledge not only influences organizational decisions, but also diversifies the organization because of its consideration.

Owner-Managers’ Diversity and Small Businesses’ Performance in Ondo State, Nigeria
Dotun Olaleye Faloye
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The vital role played by small businesses in economic development has been acknowledged by scholars and management practitioners worldwide. Despite this, small businesses have faced diverse challenges from environmental factors. The impact of these factors on small businesses performance has been documented in the literature. More so, existing studies have intensively researched the influence of owner-managers diversity dimensions on firms' performance. Nevertheless, earlier research studies had paid scant attention to the way and the circumstances under which diversity dimensions influence firms' performance. Hence, this study examines the empirical link between surface-level and deep-level diversity dimensions and small businesses financial and non-financial performance. It further investigates whether the presence of entrepreneurial orientation and organizational capabilities either mediate or moderate this relationship. A cross-sectional survey research design was adopted for this study. Using a stratified random sampling technique, 243 owners/managers across different sectors in the six major commercial cities that house 80 percent of small businesses in Ondo State, Nigeria, were selected as the study respondents. A structured questionnaire was used to capture the data. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques such as frequency distribution, factor analysis, correlation coefficient, and regression analysis. The findings demonstrated that apart from sex and religion, other surface-level and deep-level diversity construct significantly influence small businesses financial and non-financial performance, and all the constructs of entrepreneurial orientation excluding autonomy mediate this relationship. The study also found that several organizational capabilities variables moderate owner-managers diversity-performance relationship. The policy and practical implications are discussed.
Shades of Meaning
Pascale Caidor
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The concept of appropriation, particularly in the context of organizational change initiatives, has received much attention in recent years, but the study of concrete appropriation remains limited. Our research aims to shed light on the concrete dynamics of change in organizations by exploring the discourse of employees and managers in the context of diversity initiatives. We use the communicative constitution of organizations (CCO) perspective and the CCO-ventriloquial approach to analyze different forms of appropriation practices performed by employees and managers. Our findings provide a gradient approach to appropriation, from disapproval to total and unconditional appropriation of a diversity program, and uncover implicit resistance to diversity initiatives.
