Ethical Storytelling in the Nonprofit Sector: How to Highlight the Voices of Underserved Populations

Abstract

This workshop will explore how service providers can highlight the voices of historically disenfranchised communities, creating a pathway towards increased understanding and communication with non-minorities. As a case study, we will explore Refugee Services of Texas’s recently released book entitled “Plated Stories: Legacies from Home to Table” authored by the presenter, which highlights the stories and recipes of refugees, trafficking survivors and asylum seekers. Participants will engage in interactive guided activities to explore their beliefs around ethical storytelling, bring awareness to who is doing the telling and best practices in relating personal subject matter.
