LGBTQ+ Community - Safe Space for Everyone? : Racism and White Narratives in Social Media

Abstract

Every year society becomes more open and accepting of individuals with sexual preferences different than heteronormative. We see how the LGBTQI+ community becomes more influential and relevant in public spaces. Although this doesn’t mean an acceptance towards this community, it clearly signals an opening in societal minds and a chance for discussion and inclusion. Society also experiences in the present a moment of turmoil when it comes to race. The rise of movements like the Black Lives Matter or No Asian Hate have brought forward a discussion on the identity and inclusion (or marginalization) of minorities in public spaces. While these are ongoing issues, it becomes an even bigger one when we look at the intersection of sexual preference and ethnic identification. With this study I shed light into the male black gay community - how these individuals perceive their own community, and whether it values and/or accepts them.
