A Personal Narrative of "Possible Selves"

Abstract

This workshop allows participants to construct a 200-word personal narrative by applying the Markus/Nurius (1986) theory and model of “possible selves” – hopes, fears, goals, threats – to their professional lives. They will incorporate diverse types of evidence - facts, data (qualitative and quantitative), opinions, testimonies, stories and frame their narrative according to the audiences they hope to appeal to. The goal of the workshop is to show that a compelling personal narrative is an empowering tool that is crafted by synthesizing one’s experiences, knowledge, and skills acquired over time, even since childhood. It can build confidence and a sense of control as one decides what stories to include in the narrative. The use of the possible selves theory to frame the narrative allows one to consider the opportunities and challenges ahead - the paths to take and the decisions to make.
