Chinese Piano Teachers' Experiences: Intelligent Piano Technology Integrated into General Music Education Curriculum

Abstract

Music education has different characteristics worldwide, with new concepts evolving independently and interdependently in all societies. In the history of Chinese music education, many factors have affected contemporary music education from ancient times to modern China and today’s technological age. A unique phenomenon in Chinese music education known as the Piano Craze has emerged since 2012. Given the historical lack of quality in Chinese music teacher-education, technological innovations such as the Intelligent-Brand Piano have been designed to provide music teachers with packaged curriculum and pedagogical tools to support their limited abilities as educators. The research questions come as: what successes and challenges have music teachers in China experienced when incorporating the Intelligent-Brand Piano into their piano teaching? How do music teachers in China believe that their piano curriculum and pedagogy have changed because of incorporating the Intelligent-Brand Piano into their teaching? The population being studied is 325 Intelligent-Brand Piano teachers who are actively teaching students working for music centers/schools work for music centers/schools in 17 provinces in China. I hope to learn of the specific challenges experienced by Intelligent Piano teachers so that better support and resources can be set up so that they can more easily include this technology into their music lessons, allowing their students to experience stronger music education experiences. By collecting the data, China’s music education field can continue building stronger and more effective music programs that include stronger components of technology.
