Centring Community Voices
Tyler Stewart
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This paper reviews four case studies of exhibition development projects that included community perspectives within the visitor experience. Each of these projects sought to both establish and strengthen relationships between the institutions developing exhibition projects and the communities they serve. By centring community voices within museum projects, a deeper sense of ownership in the final result is fostered through increased participation. Many museums have realized the importance of shifting from authoritative-voice exhibits to perspective-based projects that avoid telling a singular story and instead allow visitors to draw their own conclusions from a multiplicity of featured voices. The exhibits profiled within these case studies used social media, surveys and qualitative interviews to engage community participants – each with their own strengths and drawbacks. These projects were exhibited in multiple formats, including interpretive displays, comic books and audio exhibits. Each project engaged the community in different ways to build stronger connections. This study examines how each project was developed and what learnings can be taken away for other institutions seeking to engage the communities they serve in more meaningful ways.

The New Palais de Glace
Jonathan Feldman
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
In 2019, a new director was appointed to the Palacio Nacional de las Artes (Palais de Glace), an institution in charge of, among other things, the organization of the National Salon of Arts, the most prestigious award event for artists in Argentina. Feda Baeza, who was undergoing a gender transition at the time, led a team of young professionals into a new era of the Salon Nacional, bringing forth a politically engaged program of exhibitions and public events. This paper analyzes the nature of the changes introduced at the Palais de Glace, and the National Salon, which describes a process of inclusion and community engagement in, at least, three dimensions: the transdisciplinary nature of art, the expansion of selection committees and artists to underrepresented regions of the country, and the visibility of dissident identities. These transformations are part of a broader process of institutional reconsideration in most Latin American countries. For example, the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Chile) has incorporated a strong feminist gaze to their collections and shows. The Museo Nacional de Artes (Mexico) has organized exhibitions and activities around topics of native culture (arts, food, etc.) to re-think the concept of modernity in Mexican institutions. Utilizing a transdisciplinary method that includes concepts from Art History, Sociology and Museum Studies, this paper will focus on how the changes made to the Palacio Nacional in Argentina participate in the configuration of social imaginaries that counterbalance dominant narratives, introducing other histories, different perspectives to an otherwise centered perspective.

Inclusive to Some
Alia Reza
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Historically, museum curation and programming efforts in the United States have excluded marginalized populations, including immigrants. While many museums are trying to be more inclusive, the vast majority of museum visitors in the U.S. are still White, middle- and upper-class Americans. Immigrant populations in particular are overlooked by cultural heritage institutions, in part because research on how these groups relate to museums, and what they need from them, is lacking. To increase our understanding of how U.S. museums do and do not serve immigrants, I offer a literature review focused on three research areas: immigrant information access, museology, and immigrants in museums. The review examines immigrant interactions with museums, which influence how museums create programming for immigrant communities. It reveals a gap in literature regarding first-hand immigrant interactions, increasing awareness of relevant research and outlining new avenues for future research regarding immigrant populations in modern museums.

The inclusion of quality criteria in translation processes related to educational accessibility is of particular scientific interest. This paper presents the results of the intervention carried out in room 1 of the Archaeological and Ethnological Museum of Granada through the R&D research project Al-Musactra: Universal access to Andalusian museums through Experiences and research in educational contexts translation (B-TIC-352UGR18) and co-funded by the Spanish Ministry of Universities and the European Union - NextGeneration EU in which the translation into sign language of the content of room 1 has been provided as a resource to which users had access through a classroom session that took place in the European Heritage Days 2021 addressed to a group of the Sagrada Familia Special Education School of Granada. The source text is a video of great terminological richness in which a guided tour takes place. The video corresponds to the prehistoric period of Granada and is conducted by the director of the museum. The translation process allowed us to deal with translation difficulties and offer quality linguistic solutions for the deaf community. An interactive methodology has been chosen to engage children's participation and promote their learning.

Children as Collaborators?
Stefanie Steinbeck
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Children are a key demographic for museums to consider in their practices. Yet their experiences of visiting museums is under-researched in a context outside of learning. Whilst participatory research with younger visitors continues to develop as an area of research, there continues to be an emphasis on children as learning bodies, who are in the museum for educational purposes above everything else. Birch (2018) notes that to re-conceptualize how children are perceived and engaged within museums, it would be helpful to have more participatory research findings, which can reveal a broader picture of children’s embodied perspectives that are untethered to a learning trope. How might we detach the perception of being a child and being a learner?? What would such a detachment look like considering the museum’s consolidating role as an educational facility? Taking on these difficult questions, this paper reflects on the challenging nature of producing collaborative museum exhibitions with younger visitors. Framed around the research question ‘What kinds of tensions emerge in museum collaborations with children when the frame for the collaboration is challenged?’ the paper offers a reflective discussion around the authors’ experiences with broader collaborative museum research and exhibition development projects ranging from co-design to citizen science. Conceptually the paper turns to Freire’s (1993) pedagogy of the oppressed, to question whether museum professionals and scholars are genuinely able to consider children as "valued social actors and knowledge-bearer" if we only do collaborative work as a means to educate them.

The Social and the Sacred
Jose Galvan Mora
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Through questions of community, place, identity, and belonging, this paper proposes a work-in-progress approach to representing religious identity through curatorial and collection work at the Chicago History Museum (CHM). Chicago is a city embedded with spiritual and sacred legacies, from Indigenous communities to the city’s first built places of the worship; from the complex legacies of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition to hosting the contemporaneous first interfaith gathering of the Parliament of the World’s Religions. Centuries of migration have shaped and reshaped Chicago as different communities come to create a spiritual home. Questions this study explores include: How do we show adequate care in daily operations/collection work with sacred and spiritual objects? How do we best partner with communities in discussing and describing belief through lived experiences in a museum setting? Through a decolonized lens, how might we be able to centralize shared authority? How might both tangible and intangible elements of religious identity be activated within and beyond the walls of the museum? How can the museum activate its reach on social media to share religiously diverse narratives and stories? We use the Chicago History Museum's ongoing collaboration between its curatorial and communication departments which focuses on centering sacred spaces and artifacts to activate ongoing internal efforts to address collections and representation in preparation for broader community engagements as a case study.

Understanding Museum Audience through Non-participant Observation
Selene Frascella
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The new museum definition (ICOM 2022) has officially recognized accessibility, inclusion, and community participation as intrinsic elements of this institution. These characteristics are at the basis of such a close relationship with the audience that necessarily requires an in-depth knowledge of the same, which goes beyond the quantitative data of admissions. However, this type of research is not widespread, both because of the limited resources available and a bias on the part of professionals. In this context, this research aims to contribute to filling this gap by presenting the results of non-participant public observations at the National Archaeological Museum in Taranto (Italy). This method makes it possible to assess, through specific indicators, the use of the museum space, the relationship with the exhibition and the effectiveness of the communication between the audience and the artworks realized through the museum set-up. Furthermore, these data are presented in comparison with the results of a previous research conducted with the same methodology and in the same museum in 2018. This comparison will make it possible to verify what changes have taken place in audience profile and behaviour, and to measure the effectiveness of the interventions made by the museum in recent years to improve the quality of the museum experience. In conclusion, this work will deepen the knowledge of the public and identify its needs and the exhibition solutions that can respond to them, thus constituting elements that can promote and catalyse successive inclusive and participatory processes.

Museums in Color

Rachel Dukes
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Museums have the power to reach audiences across backgrounds and have long been acknowledged as sites of learning and knowledge sharing which is a foundational and relevant facet of this long-standing institution. However, museums, more than anything, should encourage exploration, discovery, joy, play, and rest. Museums, as they currently appear and function, do not create space for this range of actions and emotions. The imposing architecture and intimidating campuses of traditional museums might deter visitors from engaging with the space. And once inside, a sea of white walls, which represent “purity” to cleanse the visual palette, makes the space seem clinical, sterile, and loveless. These visual markers all serve the white gaze, intentionally subduing the visitor into conformity. In adherence with the latest ICOM definition of museums as “accessible and inclusive” spaces, the traditional appearance of museums should not turn visitors away from engaging with the space, it should allude to the power of museums to be an agent for the range of emotions discussed above. This paper argues that by infusing bright and audacious colors into the exterior and interior design of a museum, visitors can engage obnoxiously with the space, defying traditional museum etiquette. In doing so, visitors might feel more inclined to view the museum as "home" which naturally encourages community building. Additionally, this paper explores what museums might look like if they were prioritized as a gathering place before a space of education, or a space that collects and preserves objects.

New Perspectives on the Objects of the Gran Chaco’s Collection from the Museo de La Plata (Argentina)
Ana Inés Canzani
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The Museo de La Plata first opened in 1889 and, since then, has become an emblem of decimononic museums. Mainly dedicated to the collection, research and exposition of its natural sciences repertorium, it enjoys an important area of Anthropology, along an Ethnography Division boasting approximately five thousand artifacts from diverse regions of the world. This paper brings forward the appraisal of an inclusive experience set at the Museo de La Plata with artifacts from the Gran Chaco ethnographic collection. Through a heritage appropriation practice framed within the methodology of collaborative ethnography, the objects of the Gran Chaco collection are brought to a toba/qom community leader, permitting access to narratives associated to them. Themes as spirituality, nature, the elder, the connection to other communities, among others, appear in an ensemble of discursive associations linking the materiality of the artifacts with memories and ancestral practices. As a result of the experience, a participative catalogue was elaborated connecting scientific and communitary knowledge, as well as generating bridges between past and present in the context of the museum. A novelty at the regional museum level, this type of initiative allows us to reflect upon the possibilities of recontextualization of artifacts by the opening of the collection to new discourses, strengthening the role of the museum as a place of intercultural dialogue.

Labeless Labels
Chiara Ianeselli
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This paper’s research area is situated in the framework of commitment to rethink the ethics of representations various institutions have undertaken for what concerns labels and the policies of labels making. The role of labels indeed, has changed over the last decades, and from being apparently objective, “matter of fact” data, they have gained a wide range of functions and now they can be considered interpretative, reflective tools aimed at providing a more in-depth analysis on a variety of subjects, from provenance to artists’ insights, to contextualization. Institutions have also launched several initiatives led at diversifying exhibitions, reaching broader audiences, and removing cultural biases from their programming: labels in some cases reflect these major changes. This paper presents the current status of labels at the Gemäldegalerie, the Neue Nationalgalerie and the Hamburger Bahnhof, and reflects the current trends being explored, also by comparing these cases with recent debates around titling issues arose for example at the Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden, also in Germany. The text reflects upon the urgency of developing critical tools to analyze how and what stories are presented in cultural institutions. In particular the aim is to analyze the current status of reflection on this topic and to bring further attention on labels as mediation tools between the context(s) and the object. In place of their legacy as solely informing, if not instructional tools, labels should take on a new role as discussion forums for sparking debate and for honouring unseen experiences, also to enhance accessibility.

The Fallout of the Pandora Papers
Katie Prinkey
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
In 2021 the Pandora Papers were released by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, revealing a global network of secret financial dealings by wealthy individuals and world leaders who took advantage of shell companies, off shore accounts, and tax havens. Although the data leak was shocking, the Pandora Papers sent waves through the museum world, revealing a darker side to art dealers, wealth, and museums. The art and museum world has latched on to one major player; Douglas A.J. Latchford (1931-2020). Latchford was the pre-eminent collector and dealer of Cambodian antiquities. Prior to the Pandora Papers Latchford was under investigation for forging documents and dealing in looted art/artifacts. With the release of the Pandora Papers museums have had to take the brunt of the criticism surrounding the data regarding Latchford’s shell companies and off shore accounts. Museum responses have been lukewarm but are important and will set precedence for museum ethics, art dealers, collectors, and what happens when dealers/donors of objects lose their reputation. The response to the Pandora Papers from museums is an opportunity to restructure relationships between the market and the public museum. The International Council of Museums (ICOM) has guidelines regarding provenance and monetary donations, but there lacks clear procedure on a situation such as Latchford and the Pandora Papers. I focus my response on three museums; the Met, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Denver Art Museum and exam current policy and scholarship regarding tainted monetary donations and provenance guidelines, relying on ICOM codes.

Hybrid Collaborative Curation and Creation in Museums
Zida Wang
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Museum participation that builds community has been discussed by many professionals (Falk & Dierking, 2012; Hein, 1998; Simon, 2017; Villeneuve & Love, 2017) from the perspective of museum education, education curation, visitor-centered curation, socially-engaged art, etc. Co-curation and co-creation practices are artwork creation practices that emphasize collaboration works among curators and creators transited from passive participation to active collaboration. Yet, many scholars concentrate on traditional onsite museum learning (Falk & Dierking, 2012; Hein, 1998; Kothe, 2016; Simon, 2017). The third place theory (Oldenburg, 1998) has been applied to many onsite museum practices as well to improve social interactions. With the emergence of the virtual museum, digital exhibition platform, and technological advancement, the demand for formal digital and hybrid exhibitions that accelerate community collaborative curation and creation study evolved. The FSU Museum of Fine Arts is a dynamic institution that utilizes its exhibitions to foster a sense of community engagement and collaboration. Through the varied exhibitions and programming, the museum seeks to provide visitors with a deep understanding of the curation and creation process. The exhibitions hosted at the museum feature collaborations between multiple artists, visitor participants, community stakeholders, and curators, showcasing the diverse perspectives and voices of the community. The museum provides a safety hybrid third place for museum all participants and community stakeholders.

Decolonize the Surf
David Crellin
Innovation Showcase
The Pacific Coast of the United States, especially California, defines much of its identity in the public imagination through the sport and cultural formations of surfing. Throughout its history, this identity has been almost exclusively associated with white men as the accepted standard bearers of surfing’s evolution and excellence. This narrative runs parallel to the larger political and social discourses of Whiteness and racialized exclusion in American society that persist to this day. “Decolonize The Surf- The Ocean as Contested Space in Surf Culture,” explores the history of racism and representation in the formation of the so-called “California Dream” of surfing, presenting research that examines its complicity in perpetuating legacies of racism and white supremacy. The project encourages a reckoning, reevaluation, and dialogue throughout surf culture, while illuminating contemporary efforts to reimagine greater diversity, equity, agency, and inclusion. Decolonize The Surf is designed to engage and educate, its content structure and style utilizing surfing’s colloquial vernacular and situational milieu. It deploys popular forms of digital media technologies to break down barriers of access to the forums of scholarly communication and research embedded throughout the project. Decolonize The Surf is a multivalent synthesis of research, scholarship, art and embodied experience, standing as a contemporary expression of academic and public-facing knowledge production. As museums expand their definitions of purpose, meaning, pedagogy and curatorial scope as sites of investigation and leaders of culture, Decolonize The Surf offers a valuable opportunity to enhance discoverability, outreach, access, and the dynamics of visitor learning and participation.

University-affiliated Museums' Efforts toward Community Engagement
Olivia Cimino
Poster Session
My thesis paper attempts to evaluate and critique three university-affiliated museums' efforts towards community engagement. I use my position as a museum-worker and a student of museum studies to approach scholarship on the basis of social justice informed community engagement practices. This socio-cultural critique utilizes a post-structuralist feminist and intersectional framework all informed by social justice-based concepts of an equitable museum. I look at the question and engage multiple avenues of both qualitative and quantitative research on three university-affiliated art museums. My data collection consists of a survey posted at the entrances of the chosen museums, personally combing through museum websites, and examining the physical spaces surrounding the museums. This mixed-method approach works to analyze the four main tenets of community engagement within a museum: programming, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging. I argue that according to visitor input, both private and public university-affiliated museums need to focus more efforts toward conversational exchange between the public and the institution. My final solution to improve equitable museo-community exchanges is twofold. Firstly, to hold ‘community listening sessions’ allowing all members to speak to museum staff in a conversational face-to-face manner, and secondly, to supplement employee training with materials that correspond with these beliefs.

Kafr el-Sheikh Museum and Social Inclusion
Mohamed Abdelrazik
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Museums, as dynamic cultural institutions, have existed throughout history and evolved in form and content until they reached the current museum model. The museum serves a variety of educational, social, economic, and civic functions. They are also bearers of values that have become embedded in the social fabric and incorporated into its institutions. A museum is a structure that houses skills, values, collections, knowledge, and exhibitions. Interaction occurs through exhibitions in addition to other educational activities. Within the cultural community, it was associated with many species' theatre, music, and cinema. Museum, like all species, competes with its close relatives. In nature, animal species compete for energy and living space, resulting in both competitive exclusion and coexistence. Since the earliest historical times, the governorate of Kafr El-Sheikh has had a great share of its contribution to the history of Egyptian civilization, this study aims to shed light on the role of social conclusion in one of the newest regional museums in Kafr el-Sheikh by discussing a case study, which is the "Kafr el-Sheikh Museum," one of the new museum projects that were established in Egypt. Throughout the research journey, we focus on identifying obstacles and challenges, as well as finding the necessary solutions to provide various services that consolidate the phenomenon of social inclusion, with a focus on the application of digital technologies to enhance the experience of disabled visitors.

New Strategies for Exhibiting the Seized Cultural Heritage Property to Strengthen Egypt's Inclusive Museums
Hamdy Hammam Hassan Husien
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Egypt's cultural heritage is being drained by the trade in looted antiquities, which is being combatted by the Central Administration for Archaeological Units in Egyptian Ports, which commissioned to preserve the cultural heritage (locally and internationally) and prevent its smuggling through the different Egyptian ports. According to the official statistics of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities the total number of seized archaeological artifacts from 2010 to 2021 is about 22732 and this number is growing! Throughout the history, Egypt is an attractive destination for antiquities traffickers to excavate artefacts to sell on the worldwide black market because of its rich ancient and current history. The engagement of local communities is one potential solution for the inclusive museums in Egypt. The artifacts that were seized in Egyptian ports and used as the core objects of new museum exhibitions are described in this paper as a means of interpretation them to the public and of engaging the local community. The journey of those artefacts from being seized to being displayed in the new museums which are presented in the paper, along with the processes involved in seizing, documenting, conserving, transporting, interpreting, managing visitors, providing informational resources, and putting visitor guidance into practice in their museums. The findings are discussed in broader contexts about repatriation and post-colonial cultural management in Egypt and shed light on how the inclusive museums could play the important role to engage their local communities throughout the seized artifacts?
Cultural Heritage in Local Communities of Egypt
Shenouda Rizkalla Fahim Youssef
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Egypt is currently witnessing a rapid opening of new museums across the country. The process mirrors attempt of the central government to make the archaeology and history of the country accessible to an Egyptian audience outside urban and touristic centres. However, the initiative has been launched with little recognition of local communities, and the museums do not attract the envisaged visitors. The paper investigates the reasons and effects of this development and contributes to a change of museum practices in the Egyptian provinces, using the Sharm ElShiekh Museum as a case-study. The results are related to wider discussions of museum roles in preserving local community identity, applied to the content and display of the Sharm El-Sheikh museum. Sharm El-Sheikh museum one of the most recently opened museums in Egypt. The museum exhibits a rich exhibition of the contemporary heritage of Sinai. This paper explores the content of this exhibition and its relationship to local community identity, the activities which relate to this exhibition, people's reactions to the exhibition and how the museum employed the Bedouins in setting up the museum display.
