Cross-Cultural Syncretism Through the Transmedia Exhibition : The Innovative Application of IT and Digital Technology Within a Museum or Heritage Exhibition

Abstract

This presentation explores the exhibition model of the inclusive cross-cultural transmedia exhibition that interweaves physical, virtual, and digital spaces and sets up new kinds of dialogic exhibition practices and museographic forms (including film/video, VR, AR, performance, and sound/music) based on digitally and physically integrated infrastructure that supports digital cultural collaboration. The model uses the exhibition pre-production phase to build inclusive museography in terms of narrative, storytelling, and self-narrative and to create bonds between objects, narratives, and people and their biographies as carriers of an identity. The session will demo concepts and tools for exhibition-making that combine different and previously separated cultural elements and create a new shared cultural arena for reviving tangible and intangible culture and heritage through a museum exhibition. It will introduce the concept of cross-cultural syncretism - creolization underpinned by digital technology that challenges the current hierarchical structure of exhibition practices and the traditional autonomy of a singular curatorial vision and encourages the connection of geographically or physically remote exhibition spaces and communities or specific vulnerable groups through transmedia storytelling. The identified components of this concept include unfolding different peoples’ identities through the intertwining of human and material agency and technology in shaping social processes while emphasizing the role of objects and the material environment in exhibition development. It is situated within the empirical findings of cultural psychology that suggest the first-person perspective in exhibition-making to avoid the tendency to present the culture and heritage of members of a particular group through stereotypical group attributes.
