Abstract
With a push towards the cool embrace of digital technologies in all of the spheres of our lives, there has been a concerted effort by museums internationally to incorporate more technology into exhibitions. This effort is designed to bring museum exhibitions up to scratch with the world outside of our gallery walls, with designers creating hybrid spaces where the digital and physical co-exist. This can range from QR codes to digital screens and games. But how do our audiences engage with these efforts? What works best? And how can these attempts further improve the accessibility of our museums? This paper attempts to answer these questions, examining the way that contemporary exhibition design makes use of both digital and analogue interactives in museums in the UK, Europe, Middle East, and Australia. This topic was studied over the course of a 2 month research trip as part of a George Alexander Foundation Fellowship.
