The Liberation War Museum (LWM) in Dhaka, Bangladesh, stands as a beacon of social inclusiveness and community engagement. Established in 1996, it is nationally and internationally recognized as the premier institution on the history of Bangladesh’s independence. The museum, through its displays and diverse programs, links the history of the Liberation War with contemporary problems. LWM's multifaceted approach includes physical and virtual outreach programs, festivals, memorial sites, and collaborations with communities nationwide. The museum's bilingual, fully accessible thematic galleries vividly narrate Bangladesh's history and the 1971 struggle for independence. For Dhaka students of all ages, LWM has special activities. For students in 64 districts of Bangladesh, two mobile museums bring programs and mini displays to educational institutions nationwide, who may not be able to visit the physical museum, establishing a connection with people in remote areas. As one example of these activities, students are encouraged to gather eyewitness accounts of the war; to date, over 56,000 interviews have been collected. LWM's aggressive transition to virtual platforms during the COVID-19 pandemic underscores its adaptability and outreach to diverse audiences. With an unwavering commitment to research, documentation, education, and community engagement, LWM exemplifies an inclusive museum. It serves as a custodian of memory, actively contributing to global discussions on genocide, justice, and sustainable development. As it strides confidently into the future, LWM will continue to bridge historical narratives with current issues, fostering a society of peace, harmony, and global understanding.

Towards a Digital Contact Zone

Operating as a digital contemporary arts resource within both Amgueddfa Cymru (Museum Wales) and National Contemporary Arts Gallery for Wales, Celf ar y Cyd (Art Together) intends to enhance the accessibility of museum collections, through both an extensive programme of digitisation and an accompanying diversification of the voices that contribute to the ways in which collections are interpreted and understood. The potential benefit that this demonstrates is perhaps most obviously outward facing and, indeed, the intention for the initial phase of my data collection was to undertake a programme of qualitative research with those working with the resource within the museum, to evaluate this external benefit from an institutional perspective. During initial thematic evaluation, however, a series of more internal benefits consecutively emerged. Investigation of these forms the basis of this paper, which will consider three interconnected aspects of this institutional impact. Firstly, this paper discusses the practicalities of the variously collaborative method of working which Celf ar y Cyd incorporates, primarily within Amgueddfa Cymru. This is then expanded to consider the different values that this facilitates, discussing the inter-related benefits of process and challenge at both theoretical and practical level. Findings are also positioned within the wider framework of ‘a digital contact zone’, understanding of which my PhD research intends to contribute to, as a space where the varied creative uses and responses that are facilitated by Celf ar y Cyd might develop an understanding of the museum as community, in various ways.

In this paper, I advocate engaging in reparative descriptive work within ethnographic museums' online collections databases. Word searches have created near-infinite ways for internet users to group and categorize museum artifacts, including colonially collected objects with language dating back to the time of acquisition. I present a case study taken from my Master's research, where I conducted a word search for "magic" in the collections online databases of two British museums (the British Museum and the Pitt Rivers Museum). I first reference the complex biography of magic as a category and its relationship to ethnographic collecting, before delving into the nuanced ritual practice of the artifacts in question. I ultimately conclude that the uncritical deployment of Western terms to categorize a geographic diversity of artifacts may inadvertently pathologize non-Western rituals and objects, perpetuating colonial biases and epistemic violence within museum narratives. By shedding light on these issues, I hope to contribute to ongoing discussions on museum reform and underscore the urgency for reparative action within archival description, particularly as museums are rapidly digitizing their archives and making their collections available to the public. I emphasize the importance of critically reassessing terminologies beyond exhibition labels to ensure that online collections avoid hegemonic bias/reductionism and reflect diverse cultural knowledge systems.
