Abstract
This paper introduces the virtual museum as an expansion of traditional museums, examining diverse possibilities for utilizing technology-based displays of virtual content to craft a distinct and personalized visitor experience. We delve into the innovation of virtual museums, emphasizing the added value to displayed content and fostering innovative interactions with the material. Three specific areas of creating an engaging visitor experience are explored in more detail, including the development of apps and games designed for home or classroom use, virtual tours enabling non-physical field trips, and museum quests that seamlessly blend virtual and real-world elements. In conclusion, we discuss additional opportunities for deploying the combination of virtual and real elements to enhance interactive and conversational visitor experiences.
