Inclusive Museum: Education Projects for Students with Visual Disabilities

Abstract

The development of educational activities for blind or partially sighted young people is a requirement of many museums, which over time have created projects for real integration and participation in educational activities designed for those disadvantaged students who would otherwise be excluded from visit. Several museums around the world, including Italy, have developed programs and initiatives to make art and culture accessible to the blind and visually impaired and represent a significant step towards inclusiveness, allowing everyone to enjoy art and culture, beyond every barrier. Sicily is also taking its steps towards opening up to inclusive activities for the blind. Among these we can mention the “Borges” Tactile Museum in Catania, a space entirely dedicated to the blind in which the only rule in force inside the museum is “Forbidden NOT to touch”, so as to feel the art firsthand through one’s own fingers. Also in Palermo the Regional Gallery of Sicily, Palazzo Abatellis is opening towards inclusive activities, understanding the social and cultural importance of the project. Guided tours and tactile itineraries allow visitors to touch three-dimensional reproductions with braille supports of some works preserved in the gallery. Our study, oriented on the spaces of Palazzo Abatellis, aims to enrich and integrate the already existing educational offer using different solutions that involve the use of multi-material materials with different textures or the creation of 2.5 or 3D prints of representative works of the Museum.
