Enhancing Culture Sector Inclusivity through Immersive Approaches in Nature: Global Trends in Sustainability within Cultural Landscapes and the Case Study of AlUla Heritage Site

Abstract

An immersive approach to culture involves creating experiences that deeply engage individuals with the cultural elements being presented – helping to drive greater inclusivity and engagement from audiences regardless of socio-economic background and education. I discuss why it is important for the culture to move beyond traditional passive observation (looking at objects in glass boxes) and encourage active participation, emotional engagement, and a sense of presence in the cultural experience. The study focuses on the need for disrupting the culture sector to be more inclusive to local communities and individuals with different backgrounds by using an immersive approach to museum curation, exhibition delivery and other elements – within a cultural landscape and natural context. I share a comprehensive analysis of global trends in delivering inclusivity through immersion. We present the most relevant trends in cultural landscapes and the fusion between cultural heritage sites and nature, and distil key learnings from taking an immersive approach to the culture sector and how delivery of cultural assets. We present research findings and evidence available demonstrating how immersive approaches are linked to higher levels of engagement in culture. The study explores how the delivery of cultural sector in AlUla, Saudi Arabia is encouraging active participation, emotional engagement, and a sense of presence in the cultural experience and how we deployed some of the sustainable, immersive strategies to deliver an inclusive cultural experience and heritage offer.
