The Price of Progress: Technology and Mental Health

Abstract

Does the rise of technology create fear? Does it allow people to be complacent in an unhealthy, depressive lifestyle? Does it promote apathy towards in-person social interactions? We as a society have now become psychologically vulnerable to technology. This poses the question: How have the consequences of the growth of technology psychologically affected the population? Negative health symptoms have been rising more than ever, with suicide being in the top 10 causes of death for men (CDC). Through theories and phenomena such as technological determinism, we find that technology and its abusive relationship with society can be held accountable. These concepts and their analysis will be used to prove that the growth of technology is in part responsible for the recent decline in mental health, leading to decreased quality of life, and increased frequency of depression, anxiety, and resentment toward society.
