Barbosa Pharmacy (18th Century): Investigating Sensory Experiences for Individuals with Visual Impairments

Abstract

The Barbosa Pharmacy, dating back to the 18th century and housed within the Lisbon Pharmacy Museum’s collection, serves as the central focus of this initiative. The objective is to spotlight the ongoing efforts aimed at developing accessible resources tailored for individuals with visual impairments. The goal is to illuminate the pharmacy’s structure and decorative intentions. To achieve this, a model has been crafted to accurately depict the wooden framework of the Barbosa pharmacy, facilitating tactile interaction. Additionally, a three-dimensional representation of a ceramic jar, adorning the shelves and historically used for storing medicinal ingredients, has been created. This model will be enhanced with fragrances evoking the scents of the constituent materials employed in medicine production, thereby engaging visitors in an immersive sensory experience reminiscent of an 18th-century pharmacy. Engaging visually impaired individuals in projects of this nature is a crucial aspect. Keeping this in consideration, the developed products undergo thorough testing before implementation, and any suggestions for improvement are carefully considered.
