Aspect of Inclusion in Architectural Competitions for Museums and Exhibitions: Situation Study of Slovakia in 2019-2024

Abstract

Architectural competitions represent the optimal method for obtaining the highest quality design solutions, as they reflect the consensus of an expert jury that also evaluates the fulfillment of predefined conditions. The aim is to determine the extent to which inclusive design is considered in the planning and evaluation of museum and exhibition competitions. International commitments imply that public cultural spaces should be usable without discrimination, so we examine whether the inclusion aspect of competitions is sufficiently emphasised in assignments, then implemented by competitors and considered by the jury. The findings from a sample of selected architectural competitions in Slovakia during 2019-2024 are statistically evaluated. The authors of the article have been involved in the research by design method with interventions in form of competition proposals. Inclusion principles were purposefully applied in the interventions, the value of which was demonstrated by the rewards awarded by the jury. The main results are statistical findings of the occurrence of the inclusion condition in the competition assignments and their implementation in the designs in correlation with other factors, while the quantity and diversity of the considered assignments appear to be possible limitations. The inclusion requirement was present in less than half of the competition assignments and the jury’s reflection on this issue when evaluating the proposals was even lower. These findings suggest that the topic of inclusion is not yet sufficiently embedded in the professional architectural community in Slovakia. The topic is especially needed among evaluators of architectural competitions, who bear the responsibility.
