The Culture of 'Farmgiving' in Kayann Short's Ecobiography
Khushboo Sahrawat
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Kayann Short, a local community farmer, spent her childhood at her grandparent’s farm, bringing her closer to nature and acting “locally” as she grew up. Her autobiography, A Bushel’s Worth (2013), is published as an Ecobiography that provides a record of lives valuing generational rural roots and the practice of community supported agriculture (CSA) in North Dakota. The paper aims to highlight the emerging genre of Life Writing with a focus on ecobiographies. Through her life writing, Short gives a first-person account to understand the natural world by treating it as a home and exploring the value nature exhibits. Her family’s participation or “green effort” to ecological damage as an owner of a local farm called Stonebridge elicits the need for “a give and take” from the planet earth. The paper emphasizes an individual’s effort to preserve nature and seek a sustainable living. The textual analysis of Short’s ecobiography is based on life writing strategies and methods. The paper discusses the components of this environmentalist’s tale, such as traditional values (including her family’s recipes), her grandmother’s diary entries, and many authentic terms Stonebridge generates with its people. The culture of “farmgiving” curated by women and men, families and villages are at the heart of this research. Ultimately, Short’s ecobiography voices to create a new vision that promotes care to our ecological surroundings and the importance of local lives. This paper highlights the ecological footprints and realities and concludes that if one decides, human impermanence can create a legacy of sustainability.

Futuristic Restoration as a Policy Tool for Environmental Justice Objectives
Timothy Pape
Focused Discussion
The United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration promises to educate society on the many ways ecological restoration projects can benefit humankind. One such avenue of possibilities for restoration ecology lies with concerns of environmental justice. The concept of futuristic restoration, which posits a paradigm of ecological restoration that is future-oriented, aligns well with calls for policymakers to address the circumstances, processes, and systems within which environmental inequalities are typically produced. This discussion offers three policy arenas where the tenets of futuristic restoration can be employed in order to further environmental justice goals: (1) land conservation prioritization systems; (2) urban development plans; and (3) mine remediation projects. The temporal dimension of sustainability and how it pertains to restoration projects are also addressed.

Structural Impediments to Sustainable Development in Australia and the Asia-Pacific Region
Ahmed Badreldin
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
In its efforts to administer a collective global response towards combating climate change and limiting global warming, the United Nations, at its 2015 Climate Change Conference, succeeded in committing member nations to the Paris Agreement. Through the Agreement, the United Nations exemplified its dedication to supporting sustainable development. Accordingly, the primary objective of this chapter is to investigate structural impediments that prevent Australia and the Asia-Pacific region from achieving their Paris Agreement targets and consolidating sustainable development. While neoliberal globalisation has nurtured ecological damage, and widespread poverty and wealth inequality in a systematic manner, this chapter argues that the accumulation and persistence of these structural deficiencies portend severe implications against the attainment of sustainability targets. The chapter introduces an assessment approach suggesting the stage of economic development, the extent of social equity, and the political orientation of each country to distinguish its vulnerability and exposure to these structural impediments. It further addresses difficulties that governments, businesses, and civil societies face with a focus on solving them. Lastly, it anticipates a paradigm shift away from the GDP growth-based, fossil fuel-driven industrial type of economic development towards a more inclusive and equitable model comprising eco-efficient low-carbon enterprises and economies. The chapter concludes that only the equitable, more inclusive, and democratic developmental regimes are capable of consolidating sustainable development.

Measurement to Support a Just, Equitable, and Green Post-pandemic Recovery
Stacey Haugen
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The transition towards a green, equitable economic recovery requires attention to three core questions of post-pandemic population surveillance: (1) integration of data across sectors and geophysical spaces; (2) understanding measurement frameworks and methodologies, and (3) inclusive data collection. While the scope, volume and availability of data pertaining to social, ecological and health considerations has increased significantly in recent years, there are barriers to the use of such data, and their linkage to public policy. Some of these barriers include a focus on sector specific considerations, the growing complexity of data provision, and jurisdictional obstacles. These present challenges for integrating data to support post-pandemic sustainability, which must be attentive to the limits of growth. This study asked: How can the data within sustainability indicators and frameworks be best measured, interpreted, and used to both understand the “state” of data and measurement, but also leverage policy action to support a just, green post-pandemic recovery? Utilizing a scoping review method, this project examined the academic, grey and policy literatures nationally (within Canada) and globally to analyze what is being measured, how, where, and why. Despite widespread support for improved integration across data collection and indicator and framework development, few substantive, practice-based and policy-focused approaches that rise to that aspiration are in place. Moving towards a sustainable post-pandemic recovery will require that we: (1) address data gaps from marginalized populations; (2) establish consistency across data collection and the use of national indicators, that complement international goals; and, (3) make explicit linkages across sectors.

Taking Up Public Spaces
Alyssa Martens
Workshop Presentation
Through efforts that promote decolonization and anti-oppression and that actively de-centre White, dominant, “Western” narratives and centre underrepresented voices, my practice aims at facilitating the communication and amplification of identities from underserved people groups in public spaces and realms. In this workshop, I will unpack the process I undertook to amplify the stories of self-identifying older Punjabi women living in Sunset neighbourhood in Vancouver, Canada through a creative placemaking project at a local park. The workshop participants will learn a variety of techniques to engage community members through arts-based activities and will imagine how their neighbourhood might be transformed to centre the identities of underrepresented groups in their home countries.

Ecocide and Rights of Nature Law in the UK
Jodie Bettis
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
In 2021, post-Brexit environmental law making in the UK opened up debate as to how the law can better protect ecosystems from severe destruction and deterioration. As part of the state-of-the-art review for a PhD entitled ‘Theory and Practice of Ecocide Law in the UK’, this paper explores the British legal context of the introduction of Ecocide and Rights of Nature Law as a solution to the twin crises of global warming and ecological breakdown. It suggests a multipronged approach to the next opportunity to legally recognise nature rights and criminalise ecocide. Starting from the first appearance of the term ‘ecocide’ in the English language and ‘rights of nature’ in the scholarly literature, linguistic definitions of these oft dissociated concepts are set out prior to their legal definitions. Next, ecologically relevant clauses in Criminal Codes, Constitutions and national laws are compared and connected using a simple legal reasoning framework previously used to understand some fundamental legal conceptions as applied in judicial reasoning. Results show that no country in the world has yet codified both concepts concurrently and that although normatively connected, these two legislative approaches to ecosystem protection remain legally distinct. Given the flexibility of UK Statute Law and the potential obligation to transpose eco-legal protections from the international to the domestic level, a future Ecocide and Rights of Nature Law could, in theory, connect both the constitutional and criminal conditions required to eradicate ecocide.

Sustainability through Nature-based Solutions in Water
Nureen Faiza Anisha
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Nature-based Solution (NBS) is a relatively new concept, which gained more traction in the development sector in last two decades. Ecosystems are not static as they evolve over time, and NBS utilizes these ecosystem functions. In a planet with rapidly changing climate, NBS in the water sector provides long-term and larger-scale solutions that are highly adaptive to changing environmental and risk conditions. This article is a meta-analysis on how NBS in water sector can ensure environmental sustainability in developing countries while facilitating synergies between climate adaptation and mitigation. The paper highlights the climate mitigation potential of freshwater systems, and the implementation of NBS in water sector that can aid the mitigation targets while also provide hydrological solutions and other co-benefits related to disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, biodiversity protection/recovery, food security and sustainable development, particularly in the context of developing countries. This article addresses the current development context of developing countries, how they can mainstream NBS in the water sector, and essentially argues that NBS can be an effective tool to minimize the trade-offs between economic development and mitigation commitments.
Anthropowaste

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This project explores alternative production systems in garment manufacturing, focusing on re-integrating textile waste streams from a systematic design level perspective with the ultimate goal of phasing waste out. Through ancient handcraft methods such as loom weaving, I propose to expand the up-cycling techniques within the existing industrial context and fashion system as we know it, speculating on new approaches to redirect fabric scraps back into the production line and ultimately fully up-cycle garments. This research takes a look at the potential of production by-product as a “raw material” with the aim of extending textiles’ longevity and life-span and re-looping the unwanted textiles into both the garment design and manufacturing processes. By leading with an experimental and design-by-doing approach, as well as a phenomenological approach, I address the challenges in re-wiring the fashion industry and transitioning to systems that don’t have such a fatal effect in our environment. ANTHROPOWASTE proposes the re-visiting of the roots of garment making, by looking at the way fabric is woven, and redesigning the process of garment manufacturing to implement the use of the so-called textile “waste” (fabric scraps) as raw material to weave textiles back together and create fully up-cycled garments. With doing this, I question the systems in place within designing and manufacturing in the fashion world and invite the reader to dismantle these with me by introducing methods that work within a scarcity mindset and rely on innovation and creativity to gradually re-haul the existing structures in place.
