Focused Initiatives to Use Expanded Design Participation Teamwork to Build Nature Based Solutions and Urban Regeneration: How Participatory Action Research and Charrette Methods Can Broaden and Deepen Authentic, Convivial Participation from Design to Operations

Abstract

This study reviews and makes suggestions for how a deeper and broader effort to devise and maintain more comprehensive design participation teams for urban design and architecture can assist in the work to construct and maintain nature based solutions for urban to rural realms. This effort is especially important for those liminal areas that are the border zones between the artificial built environment and wilderness areas or parks, where there is an exchange of different invasive species and air and water contaminants, including waste plastic microparticles. The work to include all stakeholders, including craftspersons and technicians building and maintaining buildings and infrastructure, is also efficacious as these groups have important prior knowledge and methods of observation and ‘making’ that are unique and valuable to design, construction quality, and operational excellence.
