Sustainable Architecture and Urban Development for the Environmental Challenges of Contemporary Cities: An Analysis of Air Pollution in the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey

Abstract

In recent years the concept of sustainability has taken on a great relevance in every aspect of human production, due to the environmental impact that the development of society itself has brought with it. It was precisely at the end of the 20th century that the current trends in architectural and urban sustainability began to be developed and addressed at the Earth Summit (Rio, 1992) with Agenda 21, which refers to the action plan that societies must carry out to transform the development model toward what has been called the sustainable development, meaning to be lasting in time, efficient and rational in the use of resources and equitable in benefits, with the goal of increasing habitability and providing quality of life in the contemporary cities. In 2003, around 48% of the world’s population lived in urban areas, and it is estimated that by 2030 this number will increase to 61% (UN, 2004). The demographic expansion that the world has experienced in recent years and the human concentration in urban areas have produced important changes in our way of living and understanding the territory we inhabit. In particular, taking as a reference the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey in Mexico, this work is intended to generate a pertinent discussion in relation to the negative impact of air pollution that is generated in contemporary cities. As well as the importance of raising awareness to propose sustainable strategies in the different sectors of today’s urban society that faces important environmental and habitability challenges.
