The End of Tourism and the Limits to Sustainability
Chris Christou
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The COVID-19 pandemic proved the tourism industry to be a house of cards, and yet it has returned with a vengeance. Concealed in each argument between tourism’s sustainable visions and degrowth dialogues is the refusal to question the industry’s unconsidered origins, consequences, and existence. The critiques of tourism, brought together prove there is no sustainable path forward for the industry, locally or globally. Surely, a better world is possible, but without a collective imagination that roots itself in post-capitalist, post-industrialist possibilities, the interculturality and responsibility so often sought after is dead on arrival. Our solutions and the epistemologies that breed them are deeply impoverished by a lack of imagination. Ideology holds the possibility for new worlds hostage. Our work is not simply to debate the equity and equanimity of the matter, but to discover how our own ideologies are imaginaries that subvert imagination. If, at its core, the world’s biggest industry is unsustainable, then arguing for sustainability or degrowth is, fundamentally, no more sustainable. For social movements to succeed in the face of overtourism invasions and cultural extractivism, our modus operandi must proceed first and foremost from the poverty that sprung them. Then and only then can we begin to conjure ways of being and belonging together, ways of hosting the other deeply informed by what it means to be a guest in our own homes and neighbourhoods.

This paper draws on oceanic theory, Black studies, and musicological analysis to develop three critical concepts (seasickness, coercion, and oceanic postcoloniality) framing my dissertation research on music, labor, and affect in the contemporary global cruise tourism industry. As a music scholar, I deploy seasickness—a dysphoric condition resulting from the inner ear’s misalignment with its surroundings—as an organizing metaphor for how tourist subjects apprehend (or fail to apprehend) the modalities of racial capitalism buoying up the cruise industry. Seasickness figures prominently in my analysis of David Foster Wallace’s 1996 essay, “A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again.” Wallace’s nausea, I suggest, forms the tonal center of his critique, which is directed simultaneously at the industry’s imperative of “mandatory fun” and his fellow cruisers’ ability to ignore or rationalize the starkly racialized and transnational dynamic between labor and leisure onboard. Sonic coercion, embodied in both the blasting of the ship’s horn and the discursive maneuvers of Wallace’s cruisers, thus reveals itself as a compensatory technique by which the cruise industry’s postcolonial condition is drowned out (at least, for some) by the sounds of vacation . My discussion concludes with an analysis of the spate of viral cruise marketing that followed in the wake of Pharrell Williams’s 2013 hit, “Happy,” in which I demonstrate the ability of Western popular music to operate coercively within leisure capitalism, ultimately arguing that turning a seasick ear toward such techniques offers a crucial—if uncomfortable—platform for critique.

Exploring labor force trends in the hospitality sector across various institutional regimes
Bayaz Mammadova
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This paper investigates labor force trends within the hospitality sector across three institutional regimes in Europe where the hospitality sector contributes a large share of employment, namely Greece (Southern European), Germany (Continental), and Sweden (Social Democratic). The analysis employs secondary data from 2010-2018, sourced from various Eurostat surveys, including the Labor Force Survey (LFS), Adult Education Survey (AES), Structure of Earnings Survey (SES), and Continuing Vocational Training Survey (CVTS). Quantitative analysis was used to examine the trends in employment and changes in occupational structure over the study period. This study employs a range of statistical techniques, such as descriptive statistics to identify patterns and trends in the data. The objective of the study is to further understand the impact of the fourth industrial revolution on the hospitality sector, as well as analyze whether and to what extent these trends lead to bureaucratization, underemployment, precarisation, deregulation, and de-professionalization within the industry, especially from the perspective of education. The study provides an overview of the current state of the hospitality labor market in each country, highlighting similarities and differences in employment patterns, education and training, and earnings. The findings reveal that institutional factors play a significant role in shaping labor force trends in the hospitality sector, with notable variations between the three regimes. The paper concludes by discussing the implications of these findings for policymakers and stakeholders in the hospitality industry.

Transformations in Indigenous Cultural Tourism
Vanessa Whittington
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Drawing on scholarly literature on travel and transformation and my own empirical research, this paper explores whether visitors to places of recognised Aboriginal cultural heritage can experience processes of change, or what Bawaka Country et al. (2015, 270) call “an ontology of co-becoming”, when they travel to Australian protected areas, recognising the agentic nature of Country itself in these hypothetical transformations. For some visitors this can involve developing a (self-identified) connection with Country and a deeper self-perceived understanding of Aboriginal cultural heritage. My ethnographic research with visitors revealed that this enhanced understanding of Aboriginal cultural heritage most frequently occurred in cultural tours developed and led by Aboriginal peoples, particularly longer-term immersive experiences. However, this is not to say that visitor transformations are inevitable or even straightforward, as some visitors’ cultural tourism experiences simply reinforced pre-existing stereotypes of authentic and inauthentic Aboriginalities that they brought with them. Settler-colonial discourses about Aboriginality thus represent very real barriers to tourist transformations, discourses which are to some extent reinforced by the tourism industry and some Indigenous cultural tour providers themselves.

Accessibility Dynamics in Trekking Tourism
Amar Shrestha,
Sitaram Dahal
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Nepal, being a mountainous country is a popular destination among adventure tourists, especially trekkers. The country where approximately 17% land is above 3000 metres above sea level, is home to many mountains including 8 mountains above 8000 metres. Further, the mid hills cover the largest section of the country which itself is a perfect destination for trekking tourism. Rozycki and Dryglas (2014) opine that trekking is done in unexplored region where flow of visitors is usually low. This might be the reason trekking tourism became source of livelihood in rural areas of Annapurna, Everest and Langtang. Different places of Annapurna conservation area have been popular trekking sites. It seems obvious that trekking tourists do not prefer the places which can be accessed by vehicles. However, after decentralization and local level election, there has been whim in construction of roads in different places irrespective of its feasibility study and impact projections. Many popular trekking destinations have been victims of such practices. Recently, roads were constructed in Ghorepani and Ghandruk which are famous short trekking destinations/ stop over of Annapurna region. It is found that roads increase ease in accessibility which adds value to a destination, however, on a long run it might affect tea houses/ lodges and other communities of trekking destinations as people tend to visit for a very short while. The case study attempts to diagnose the impacts roads have brought in the trekking tourism.

Which recreational pursuits do you enjoy? Perhaps you love reading? Or a drink and some dancing at your favourite nightspot? Maybe you’re a connoisseur of cinema? Or, do you have a penchant for pugilistic combat? Whatever tickles your fancy, you can bet it’s stoked the ire of one group or another over the years! From Ancient Rome to Puritan New England, we take a whistle-stop tour of the enduring entanglement between entertainment and disapproval. And, with rapidly evolving leisure landscapes centred around Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality technologies – and indeed emerging and novel forms of censorious behaviour – what might the past suggest about the potential futures of our vital pleasures and the (inevitable) outrage which follows them? Through a careful analysis and interpretation of the academic (and non-academic) sources – and with a Foucauldian inclination to examine power dynamics – this study offers vivid imagery, an amusing historical anecdote or two, and most important of all: intellectual nourishment and food for thought! Just don’t enjoy it too much, or somebody might try to ban it!

Honing Heritage

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This paper focuses on an interdisciplinary study of dance festivals organized at the World Heritage Site in Khajuraho, India. The Khajuraho Dance Festival began in 1975 and I propose it significantly contributed to the inter/national attention towards the Khajuraho Monuments, which was recognized as a WHS by UNESCO in 1986. Amongst the plethora of scholarly and documentary works centered around Khajuraho, its annual dance festival, despite its long-standing repute, have not been thoroughly considered. Studies have foregrounded the revenue-generative properties of the dance festivals, without deeply engaging with the prolonged, cyclical, transactional relationship dance festivals foster between the tourists and the site. My study would like to pronounce how the popularity and value of these sites are secured and maintained through the annual, and thereby continual, performances advanced by dance festivals. Moreover, it is crucial to note that the importance of these representations extends beyond the festival period and site locations. They enter the global media and market and (re)produce cultural imaginaries of the nation. Khajuraho Dance Festival is the earliest and among the most reputed cultural programs held in postcolonial India. Therefore, this study proffers a template for touristic festivals that subsequently took shape within India and other transnational contexts. Khajuraho Dance Festival marks its 50th year in February 2024, and it is a crucial time to look at its historical trajectory and contemporary relevance.

The performing arts encompass various artistic forms, such as music, dance, theatre, and drama. These arts serve as a central service and provide artistic experiences, contributing to education, communication, economy, and tourism. The attentional dimension of performing arts has a significant role in audience engagement. Despite this, studies on the attention of the arts are scarce. This research aims to enhance the understanding of the visual interest that images related to dance, theatre, and music generate in the performing arts for internal agents, artists, and programmers through a multi-measurement study using the eye-tracking technique and short self-assessment questionnaire with questions related to the 17 photographic stimuli selected for the use of eye tracking. The participants of this study were artists and programmers who attended MAPAS 2022 (South Atlantic Performing Arts Market), which took place in July 2022 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Written informed consent was obtained from all 22 participants. The results indicate that visual responses are most captivated when subjects, especially their facial expressions, are featured on the screen. Images where individuals play a secondary role prompt viewers to explore the image but ultimately concentrate on the subjects' facial features. Performing arts generate the most interest, contrasting participants' self-reported preferences. Artists focus on the main scene, while programmers have a broader perspective, considering environmental aspects and extracting more information from the scene. However, both groups share a commonality in displaying greater interest and attention when the image showcases individuals engaged in activities they identify with professionally.

How Much Do Tourists Value Sustainable Tourism Attributes in Discrete Choice Experiment?
Jaime Blazquez Valeron,
Carmelo J. León,
Eugenio Diaz Fariña
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Sustainable tourism has gained significant interest, but research knowledge specifically on tourists' willingness to pay (WTP) needs to be more cohesive. This paper weaves the conceptual foundations of tourism and leisure with the social and natural sciences, constituting a crucial path toward a more nuanced understanding of sustainable tourism. This study conducts a systematic review and meta-regression analysis to synthesize evidence on marginal willingness to pay for sustainable attributes based on 47 discrete choice (DCE) papers. The findings reveal that tourists are more inclined to pay for sustainable product features related to nature, the environment, and local communities. Furthermore, the study delves into tourism practices and reveals possible mitigations for the impact on daily life in tourist areas. WTP estimates increase with more attributes and larger samples, while payment vehicles and sustainability status of attributes significantly influence willingness to pay. These findings provide novel evidence to guide research design and highlight sustainable features that align with tourists' preferences. This meta-regression equips tourism academics and professionals with crucial knowledge to promote sustainability by incorporating it into offerings with demonstrated consumer value. The constantly evolving nature of the tourism and leisure sectors demands a re-evaluation of existing paradigms, with it being imperative to consider novel approaches, concepts, and frameworks to drive new research, models, and practices such as this meta-regression.

Analyzing the Social, Cultural and Economic Impacts of Indigenous Tourism on the Indigenous Communities
Micheal Makary
Poster Session
Indigenous tourism is one of the fastest growing sections of the tourism industry in the most countries of the world nowadays and it can if done well, provide opportunities to promote greater cultural understanding while increasing indigenous peoples capacity and economy (Alexis C., Nelson H.,2018). As Egypt is not an exception, there are various tourism initiatives in indigenous areas throughout the country, mainly in the Nubia region, which located in southern Egypt, where most of Egypt's indigenous Nubians are concentrated. Considering tourism can lead to both positive and negative consequences the objective of this work is to analyze the socio-cultural, and economic impacts of Indigenous tourism on the Indigenous Nubian communities as a case study because there are few empirical studies in Egypt on this theme. Nubians are a distinct ethnic group descended from one of Africa’s earliest and most powerful ancient civilizations as Nubian civilization dates in this area back to around 8200 B.C (Mahgoub,1990). This study uses exploratory descriptive research. Qualitative and quantitative approaches of data collection were applied in conducting this study. Semi-structured interviews, Focus groups and observations are the main preliminary data collection techniques used in this study. while the Secondary Data were sourced from articles, statistics, dissertations, and websites. The research concludes that Indigenous tourism can have positive impacts on these communities such as saving their identity and fostering their economic development. However, it can also have negative impacts on them, which are discussed further in this poster with some recommendations.
