Immersive Horror and Torture Tourism - How Far Is too Far?: A Social Perspectives Paper

Abstract

October 2023 saw the release of a documentary covering an immersive horror tourism experience. This was the first time many people were introduced to this concept. Popular culture was quick to provide divisive opinions on the activity. However, as this phenomenon is so new, this study seeks to explore these initial social perspectives through a qualitative content analysis of comments in response to the documentary content and similar video content. By doing so, scholars gain insight into how popular opinion may view immersive horror experiences and what thematic social challenges they may present moving forward.
