Practice of Corporate Social Responsibility in Sustainable Tourism Development

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine current corporate social responsibility (CSR) practice and involvement of oil and gas companies in sustainable tourism development in Malaysia. The study also identifies types of CSR responsibilities and levels of importance, roles and contributions of oil and gas companies on CSR in developing sustainable tourism development. This study identifies the CSR key motivation drivers undertaken by oil and gas companies in Malaysia and subsequently, examines how they can successfully implement CSR in sustainable tourism. Organizational reputation and goodwill with external stakeholders are the mediating effect of CSR (independent variable) and sustainable tourism (dependent variable). In this study, CSR conceptualized as multidimensional construct which consists of stakeholder pressure represent institutional level, economic, legal, ethical and philanthropic, charity and stewardship represent organizational level. Respectively, sustainable tourism is the dependent variable and a model from UNEP (2001) will be adopted and adapted into this study which consists of economic, social and environments. The mixed method approach is adapted on this study which incorporates qualitative (in-depth interview) and quantitative (questionnaire survey) techniques. The reason of combining mixed method approach is to overcome intrinsic bias that occurrs in single method.
