Global Pressure and Local Hesitation to Open Museum Door for Social Inclusion in Latvia within Sustainable Development Framework
Elina Vikmane
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Many voices have called to promote culture as the fourth pillar of sustainable development as a necessary foundation, condition, groundwork through which understandings of social, economic, and environmental sustainability may appear (Soini & Birkeland, 2014; Hawkes, 2001). Often culture is considered a part of social sustainability pillar, covering manifestations such as equity, participation, social justice etc. (Murphy, 2012; Vallace et al., 2011; Cuthill, 2010). Although the potential of museums towards sustainable development is particularly outlined in literature, there has been no equally radical shift in museum practice (Ross, 2004; Simon, 2010; Nomikou, 2015). The paper proposes a critical review of social sustainability priorities in Latvia’s museum sector by identifying the themes of sustainable development that have been communicated as strategic priorities to stakeholders by Latvia’s nine most popular museums, whose joint annual share of visits amounts to 50% of the country’s total rate (Latvian Academy of Culture, 2018). Qualitative content analysis has been chosen to seek for both direct and latent manifestations of social sustainability priorities and lack of them in museum development strategies and their collection, research, and communication policies, both considered as the most important strategic documents and necessary prerequisite to receive state recognition via state accreditation scheme.

A ‘Story to Journey to Smart Map’ Approach to Enhance Museum Accessibility
Xi Wang
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Storytelling is widely used for enhancing learning, generating emotional engagement, and inspiring imagination; it is also a way to connect to one’s personal and collective experiences. Stories are powerful tools for social inclusion and enhanced visitor experience, especially in the contexts of museums and heritage sites. This paper presents a ‘story to journey to smart map’ (SJSM) approach to enhance museum accessibility and emotional engagement for blind and partially sighted (BPS) visitors. The SJSM approach is to present the ‘story’ of museum resources and knowledge as a journey, and then represent this journey physically as a smart map. This SJSM approach is applied through the creation of a smart map for BPS visitors. Made in partnership with Titanic Belfast, a world-leading tourist attraction, and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), the interactive map tells the story of Titanic’s maiden voyage. The smart map uses low-cost technologies such as laser-cut map features and software-controlled multi-function buttons for the audio description (AD). The AD is enhanced with background effects, dramatized personal stories and the ship’s last messages. To further evaluate this approach, a reception study was held with a group of BPS participants. A tactile self-assessment manikin was used for BPS participants to self-report their emotional responses at each location during their exploration of the map; and a questionnaire was completed afterwards. To conclude, the SJSM approach enhances museum accessibility and emotional engagement for BPS visitors and has its potential for universal access.

Museums and Inter-racial Contacts in Times of the Black Lives Matter Movement
Angeliki Tsiotinou
Poster Session
In this study I explore how museums in the United States with a history of representing ‘otherness’ can function as ‘contact zones’ and foster inter-racial understanding in times of the Black Lives Matter movement. I begin by briefly discussing the benefits, risks and challenges of inter-racial contacts as discussed in Education, Psychology, Anthropology, and Museology literature. I suggest that the insights of such literature can prove helpful in times of the Black Lives Matter movement, considering the ongoing struggle of museums to combat racism and dismantle white supremacy. To this effect, I critically analyze the permanent exhibition of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. ‘Many Voices, One Nation’, which has adopted an inter-racial contact perspective. In doing so, I raise questions such as the following: What can we learn from how this museum responded to the challenge? Also, what issues does its response raise for museums, if they are to exhibit the past with more diversity, inclusivity, and equitability in times of the Black Lives Matter movement?

Post-Pandemic Museum Space

Focused Discussion
➡️Zoom link: https://universityofmalta.zoom.us/j/92040737878?pwd=Z0dxZllFWmNKSDVVSHFONU9lQ1hGZz09⬅️The COVID-19 pandemic has ushered in times of great challenges to the museum ecosystem. Museum space as we have come to know and experience it over the years has had to morph out of circumstances. The virtual was the only museum space to consider and experience albeit in a multiplicity of formats and experiences. Much of that is nevertheless informed by the way we understand museums to be and stand for. We have come to understand the museum idea as being akin to a boxed experience stuffed prevalently with objects and material culture. We can also consider that experience as existing in defined space, understood as the walls of the buildings within which these contents are kept secure and made accessible across time. What the vast majority of museums have done so far, particularly during the mishaps and setbacks brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, is to cut out digital windows through which that experience can be accessed. Those who already had these digital windows in place sought to enlarge them, oftentimes at short notice. In my paper I shall discuss and anticipate possible futures for the museum idea that moves beyond the physical space towards a new understanding of space. I shall explore the ways and means how this can also spearhead a new museum experience that is both human-centred and informed by a greater measure of customisation and predictive content experience.
