“New Museology” as a Specific Ideology for Cultural Heritage Management in the Middle East

Abstract

As a new discipline in which practice and theory go together hand in hand, museology or museum studies field were introduced since the first half of the 20th century. The term museology has been identified by numerous authors in the recent few years. Museology as a concept offers the theoretical and critical thinking within the field of museums. As an approach linked to the “Western cultural diplomacy”, the “new museology” approach effectively applied in the museum sector through both: local authorities and communities, as partners in the decision-making and management processes. World-wide, museums have been changing from “traditional museology” to “new museology” approach, which addresses the values held by the museum and how they link it to both the activities and the museum communities. The concept was introduced as a new philosophy addressing the aim and purpose of museums and their relation with the societies and communities emphasizing on the important role that museums play within the societies.This research project addresses new empirical indication by adopting a qualitative research approach and a comparative analysis. The data are gathered from three different museums in three different countries within the region (Egypt, Tunisia and UAE), in order to observe if the current museums practices are meeting the potentials of the new museological direction - in addition to addressing the results of applying new innovative variables on the changes of management in museums sector. This adds to provide a synoptic overview on the challenges and factors facing and affecting these organizational changes.
