Race Making in the Museum: An Ethnographic Study of Manchester Museum

Abstract

This paper draws on an institutional ethnography within a regional museum in the UK. It considers how the museum, which is actively trying to address questions of diversity within it’s activities, employment, and collections is a site of the making of race and ethnicity. It asks: what are the nature of race and ethnic inequalities within the museum, particularly within staffing structures and how can the museum address them? What are the barriers to addressing the whiteness of the museum space?
