This paper rethinks the images produced in the common practice of screenshots. Screenshots are images that capture a part or the whole of the display on the screens. Mostly used for the purpose of documentation, computers and mobile phones are commonly used to take screenshots. Instead of merely displaying, the screens become image capturing devices. This indicates that screens play an active role in the operations of networked images. Analysing screenshot images from a photographic aesthetic is insufficient since screenshots is a practice where data and computational processes are entangled with the human action to capture an instance on and through the screens. The screen-operator assemblage produces a new kind of image-making practice which has to be understood as a move from the indexical to the technical and data processes in image-making. Such an understanding contributes toward how such images inform our computational contemporary visual culture. Furthermore, the paper is interested in the recognition of material objects such as the screens in the process of making images and aims go deeper into the technical processes that they facilitate. In the process of this examination, the paper offers insights into these new kinds of images.

Reimaging the City
Emmanuel Osorno
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Souvenirs are everywhere. Their ability to encapsulate the image of a city and to evoke memories of it make them desirable, treasured, and ubiquitous objects. And yet, despite their commemorative powers, souvenirs present all but an accurate depiction of a city and, as such, they contribute to a distorted, incomplete, and often problematic view of that place. After all, who gets to decide which scenes, which buildings, and whose stories are worth being represented in them? This paper argues that, given the current landscape of sociopolitical reckoning, the images and objects of souvenirs ought to be mobilized to redirect the tourist gaze towards pressing issues that affect the everyday of the city's residents. Through a series of photomontages and illustrations, this paper explores how souvenirs from New Orleans can be revisited to bring attention to, disseminate knowledge of, and generate discourse about the realities confronted every day by local residents. Ranging from infrastructural issues to race relations, the proposed images and artifacts masquerade as souvenirs to infiltrate and exploit the cycle of media consumption and production and captivate a wide-reaching audience. By operating within the realm of realism through photomontage and appropriation, these objects speculate on a new breed of activism, which reconstitutes the role of the souvenir and that of its audience, encouraging them to go from passive consumers to active agents of change.

Forest Tales: A Larval Cinema - The Smoldering Forest
Anuj Vaidya
Workshop Presentation
Forest Tales: A Larval Cinema is a speculative, femi-queer, eco-cinema project which swims in the gene pool of the South Asian Sitayana epic tradition. Sita, the female protagonist of the epic, emerges as shape-shifter and shaman in this restorying, to tell the tale of forests and fires - both real and virtual. Originally imagined as a film, this project intended to use human-powered (bicycles, wheelchairs, etc) solutions for the production of the moving image. However, since the most environmentally-friendly film is one that never gets made, the project now exists as a performance of the cinematic, allowing me to focus on the eco-logics (Ivakhiv) of the hydrocarbon imagination (Bozak) embedded in our image-making technologies and practices. A speculative cinema project at the edge of the sixth extinction, Forest Tales not only metamorphoses narrative but form itself. As a larval cinema, it proposes that we not only radically reimagine the stories we tell about our pasts/presents/futures, but also remediate the image-making technologies that we use to narrate, circulate, and consume them. In this motion-picture workshop, audience members become-sprocket and move still images in sequence, while I perform the soundtrack live. Participants are then blindfolded and led through a visualization of a scene from the imagined cinema, in effect co-creating the film through their imagination. Changing the form of the moving image apparatus transforms our social relations: if we had used a projector, we would all be facing the screen; instead now we are in a circle, facing each other.

Doubling Back
Margaret Chambers
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
With this paper, I argue for the immediate dismissal of frameworks positioning virtual space as other than “real”. Using this shift in orientation as a crucial starting point, I posit that the virtual is not, and should not be, a space of fiction, nor a secondary locale, but rather a proliferating lifeline to the physical. The virtual contains power to expand; shapeshift; liberate. It allows for a doubling queerness that finds its breath in the vibrating pixels of a screen. How then, considering the ethical complexities of virtual counterparts, in the face of late-stage capitalism, surging white supremacist ideals, and violent regression of rights for queer and female-identifying bodies, do we take care to sustain the imaginative and life-affirming potentials these spaces allow for? Combining sculpture, formal analysis, psychoanalysis, and contemporary feminist theory, I utilize the lens of my own “invisible”, queer identification to advocate for the power in viewing the physical and the digital as tender counterparts. As I work to locate my body between these shifting and overlapping spaces, I find potency in challenging expectations for what the physical and digital are prepared to hold together: surrogacy and mediation being key to my thinking. I track progression of these ideas, mining sculptural materials, endurance-driven processes, and theoretical technologies which comprise my studio practice and exploring contemporary technologies of queer pleasures through material proxy and virtual allowances. Out of this comes offerings of alternative orientation; a possibility that the future of virtual spaces might contain the physical, the “actual”.
