Money Talks: A Historical Perspective on Iconography of Non-governmental Currencies

Abstract

Long before crypto currencies appeared, actors from the private sector issued coinage for a variety of purposes. These actors selected iconography which served as a tool to promote different forms of trust. Crypto currencies, though entirely digital, use imagery to promote the notion that they are a viable means of exchange. This paper shares preliminary findings, both historical and theoretical, on the long term history of images on unofficial currencies (1600-2022).
