Zach Smith’s Updates

Week 7 Journal

This week, we read an article from the New Yorker about ideas that were slow to catch on, versus those that gained traction easily, and what the differences were between these two types of ideas. I learned that ideas are sometimes slow to be accepted even if they are effective for a number of different reasons, one prominent one being if the idea makes life more difficult for the person implementing it. For example, doctors took a long time to get behind the idea of sterilizing everything in their workstation because even though the idea was effective and life-saving, the results were intangible, as you could not see the immediate prevention of infection, and the process of sterilization was not only a lot of work for the surgeons, but could damage their hands from the near-constant contact with the sterilizing acid. I did feel, however, that the lecture slides for this week were largely pointless, and a bit of a waste of time (even though they were short), as the content covered in them was almost a word-for-word recreation of the beginning paragraph of the article that was the reading for this week. Despite that, I enjoyed the material; it was interesting to read about the treatment for Cholera, and how such a deadly and problematic disease can be essentially cured with something as simple as a water, salt, and sugar solution. I can't wait to apply the skills that I learned this week to the final project!
