Week 5 Journal

This week I learned how to use the HCD framework to analyze the needs of a person or organization, and provide insight about how and why they would have those needs. It was actually pretty fun creating anecdotes about made-up people (who were of course based on the potential people who would be using the clinics in the videos that we watched), and thinking about the kind of things that they would need based on their personality, health conditions, and clinic that they were at. I was able to be creative and imaginative while still thinking about the reality of the situation at each of the four clinics. The ability to analyze the needs of a person or a community is a crucial skill to have as an engineer, because engineers create and develop things that need to pertain to the needs of those that the product is created for. I was pleased to discover that I am pretty naturally talented at analyzing the needs of others, as this week's assignment did not prove very difficult for me. Further, this week brought up the videos from week 4 in a slightly different light, as we not only needed to understand what each clinic was lacking, but we needed to also think about the repercussions of those missing devices or practices, and then build a story about a potential patient or employee who needed something for some reason that pertained to each specific clinic and that clinic's resources. It was fun.
