Perceived Stress and Concerns of College Students at a Hispanic-serving Institution in the Time of COVID-19
Jacob Eubank
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This quantitative study assesses college student’s perceived stress and key concerns as they experience the impacts of COVID-19. The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) has been used as a retrospective measure of stress an individual had experienced within at least the last month in various studies, however, the researchers aimed to measure the perceived stress and key concerns of undergraduate students during a major event. A refined version of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), PSS-12, and a concern inventory that measured key student concerns was completed by 831 undergraduate students at a Hispanic-serving Institution in April 2020. Key findings indicate that during the pandemic, participants experienced high perceived stress. Key concerns of participants for themselves and their families included having enough food, money, essential supplies, and access to opportunities for physical activity when access to these things were limited. Findings from this study help to inform higher education administrators, health/nutrition, and recreation/leisure professionals about the impact that a major event, such as COVID-19, can have on the lives of college students - especially those living in a community and attending a Hispanic-serving Institution who were experiencing income inequality and health disparities prior to the pandemic.

The Gaps and Grey Zones between Mobilities, Migration and Tourism
Ekaterina Shebanova
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The UN (2019) specifies international migration as one of four ‘mega-trends’ that characterise the global population today. Recent academic research has drawn great attention to the fields of mobilities, migration and tourism, raising the importance of movement as a concept. The objective of this paper is to comment on the relations (and lack of them) between three research areas. To do so, this research follows a two-step analysis. First, a deep literature review was conducted in order to explore conceptual links between mobilities, migration and tourism. We claim that a number of grey zones between these concepts exist. Besides, there are many umbrella terms, which implicitly discover links between these areas of research. However, the process of transition of identities, from being a tourist to becoming a migrant, is still in shade. Second, a bibliometric analysis was performed in order to create a key word network analysis with the help of UCINET software. Key words clusterization helps to visually acknowledge the relations (and lack of) between mobilities, migration and tourism. Our main finding is that these areas of academic research are linked together through the concepts of movement and lifestyle. Future research about changing identities between tourists and migrants is also outlined at the end.

Literary Tourism and the Quest for Authenticity
Arianna Avalle
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The “Ferrante Fever”, a term used to describe the contagious wave of enthusiasm for the Neapolitan Quartet by Elena Ferrante, has led to the creation of different commercial extensions (a theater show, a tv series, and travel guides) and inspired many readers to travel to Naples. In my study, I analyze the Ferrante phenomenon in the context of “Convergence Culture” (Jenkins) and cultural tourism, exploring the transmedial qualities of the Neapolitan Novels as well as the economic and cultural impact of the travel guide "Ferrante Fever: A Tour of Naples Inspired by Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan Novels" by Danielle Oteri. The guide represents a full immersion for Ferrante’s fans in the world of the Neapolitan Novels and it also serves as a promotion tool for the city of Naples and the Campania region. Considering the link between this travel guide and the Italian identity, I hypothesize a possible exploitation of the “Italianità” of the novels to promote an “authentic Italian experience” as a selling point for this product. Overall, the Neapolitan Quartet seems to exemplify the economic potential of cultural products derived from the use of their symbolic capital for tourism purposes (Lavarone). In fact, by portraying an alluring image of Naples, Ferrante has “positively positioned” the city in the mind of her readers, re-branding its touristic image and turning her fans into literary tourists.

The “New Normal” and London’s Fine Dining Industry
Carina Jane Mansey
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, England’s fine dining industry has encountered many problems. Policy that had been created to limit the spread of the virus meant that restaurants had to close their doors to the public. While the Westminster Parliament did put in place loan schemes for businesses and a furlough scheme for the staff that they employed, neither initiative has proved adequate for all restaurants, and many have found their closure to be permanent. Fine dining establishments located in England’s capital city, London, have been hit harder than many that exist in other areas of the UK. As Edmonds has posited, restaurants in central London are heavily reliant on tourism (2020). This reliance on gastro tourists, in a world where many people have been unable or unwilling to travel, coupled with hidebound traditionalism, has added to restaurant’s vulnerability. Yet, some fine dining establishments have sought to modify their business models in order to confront the “new normal” and appeal to adapted culinary leisure practices. In this paper, I explore the detrimental impact that COVID-19 has had on London’s fine dining industry and the challenges that it has faced. For this to be achieved, I analyse Parliamentary records, established statistical data, restaurant websites and relevant press content. It is hoped that this will produce a clearer understanding of what has happened, what may continue to happen, and what might happen after the “new normal” ceases to either be “new” or “normal”.

Cruise Tourism and Criticality of Infrastructures
Allegra Celine Baumann
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Technical, net-worked infrastructure systems are the basis for modern cities and essential for the functioning and development of tourism. However, increasing tourist numbers can outrun system capacities and lead to their failure or breakdown. In this context, cruise tourism is of high relevance as this tourism sector creates high pressure on these systems by the temporal and spatial concentration of cruise tourists in a city. City governments address technical, net-worked infrastructure systems in their strategies to cope with tourism effects. In this process, they ascribe different levels of criticality to these systems, whereby some systems are dealt to be more relevant than others. Using the case study of Dubrovnik in Croatia and a qualitative research design with semi-structured expert interviews, this paper examines how criticality is ascribed in the context of cruise tourism and the impact on introduced measures to cope with tourism effects.

Measuring Sustainable Tourism
Tanya Kewalramani
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This thesis explores sustainable tourism as a catalyst to safeguard intangible cultural heritage by studying the case of Jambughoda Wildlife Sanctuary, India. This study also scrutinizes the role tourism initiatives play towards achieving the SDGs at the site. However, one cannot study the impact of sustainable development without measuring it which is meaningless without the indicators. To employ an indicator-based approach, indicators need to be developed from the grassroot level with a bottom up approach as each destination has different features. The author has mapped the interrelationship between tourism and cultural-natural heritage. The indicators for this study were devised to measure whether sustainable tourism is serving as a catalyst to safeguard and revive cultural heritage knowledge system and practices with economic, environmental, and socio-cultural sustainability, and thus, promoting solidarity economy. To measure the sustainability, a matrix-based indicator system is developed based on participant observation and semi structured interviews. This thesis also explored how the indigenous communities must apply the concept of ploughing back of profits to retain the earnings from tourism towards safeguarding and promotion of their cultural heritage. This study is an example of Pareto efficiency as well. The conclusion indicates that institutional leadership is required to steer and delve the communities towards sustainability. The author has identified the tour operators as a key stakeholder and the link between the tourists and local community, which makes them the drivers for sustainability and a funnel to implement the policy measures required for sustainability.
