Abstract

In the 21st century it is more important than ever to include global education as an essential component of a school’s curriculum. This paper showcases one innovative US charter school that created a mission to engage students in service learning in order to encourage their awareness of people and issues around the globe. The specific issues addressed are: 1) the rationale for inserting global education into the curriculum of schools, 2) how the pedagogy of service learning is able to advance goals of global understanding, and 3) how the school’s vision is able to benefit both teachers and students.
