Week 5 Journal

This week we re-examined the Human-Centered Design approach and how to implement it in a real world setting. We learned about Ethnography, which is the study of humans in their natural habitat, and how it relates to observing needs. Ethnography is useful at the beginning of the design process to identify the needs of the customer or business. However we also learned to not impose our beliefs when coming up with needs. In terms of healthcare, problem identification can be accomplished by using observations, reading literature such as PubMed, or by interviewing patients or staff. After the problem has been identified, it then needs to be defined by going through a list of questions about the problem. We also learned about converting observations into needs statements. The process is fairly simple and involves first defining the user, coming up with a verb to define the need, and finally discussing any surprising insights about the need. We used this conversion to needs statements for our homework, which involved re-watching the videos from last week and coming up with needs using this approach. The homework for this week was difficult to understand at first, and I ended up writing an essay before realizing the homework was to fill out the worksheets. However, it was interesting and fun to come up with stories for needs for the four different clinics.
