Abstract

The Ecological Systems Model is applied to professional development and professional competencies for early childhood educators in order to support young refugee children and their families. This nested approach emphasizes the need to design and implement refugee education in ways that account for the complexity of the refugee experience. Specifically, we discuss multiple levels of influence on refugee children, including classroom practices, teacher preparation, and the need to coordinate educational services with other actors, such as health and social welfare programs.
