Abstract

This article describes the results of a study spanning five years that examined freshman and sophomore college students’ perceptions concerning globalization and social responsibility through writing assignments in an undergraduate world regional geography course. Students investigated globalization on a personal level and submitted two writing assignments describing their analysis of their exploration. The first writing assignment involved an investigation of the origins of clothing in each student’s closet. The second writing assignment served as a reflection for students to express personal interpretations of the effects of globalization on themselves and the world. The papers functioned as data that provided insights into students’ perceptions concerning globalization and their personal social responsibility. Their perceptions were as varied as the views of experts in the area of globalization.
