Allan Yarema joined the Department of History in Fall 1999. His dissertation identified essential elements for an entry-level United States history sequence and published “A Decade of Debate: Improving Content and Interest in History Education” in The History Teacher. Other work examined the American Colonization Society from which he published a book The American Colonization Society: An Avenue to Freedom? Other publications include “Riveting the Chains of Slavery: The Irony of the American Colonization Society” in Southern Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal of the South and “American Colonization Society” and “Colonization” in The Essential Lincoln: A Political Encyclopedia. Yarema teaches World Geography, Cultural Geography, History for Teachers, The American South, and American survey courses and advises students for Social Studies and History teaching certification. Other work related to teacher education includes Lesson Study, a professional development model originating in Japan, in which he collaborates with other academic departments at the university.
