Abstract

An outreach program for children with intellectual disabilities and their parents was implemented and evaluated. This study was initiated to: (a) help children with intellectual disabilities in learning functional skills through goals set by their parents, and (b) bring positive changes in the teaching style of the parents. Five children with intellectual disabilities were selected and a functional skills assessment was done of each child by using already developed ecological inventories of functional skills. On the basis of the assessment, a functional skills training program for each was designed and implemented by involving the parents. The parental teaching style was observed. Results indicated that the children's goal attainment and the parental teaching style changed positively and significantly.
