Abstract

The paper is aimed at exploring the practices of Nigerian visual arts from a historical approach. It specifically identifies the visual art forms in the pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial periods, bringing to light the uniqueness in the various art practices, documenting the art practices in Nigeria and their historical context. The paper also discusses the methods and techniques of execution and prevalent media in the various areas of art, particularly painting, sculpture, and ceramics in a minimal manner. These areas were focused on because of their historical importance in African art, particularly during the pre-colonial period. A survey research method was adapted. Major art works were briefly highlighted. The use of photographs and interviews was adapted. Also, an observational technique was utilized to confirm literature.
