Abstract

This paper proposes a conceptual framework for understanding long term workplace integration of internationally educated nurses (IENs) in Canadian settings. While there is much IEN related research, most of it is focused on various aspects of the early phases of getting oriented and transitioned into the new nursing environment. This paper draws on relevant perspectives from the social science literature on integration of immigrants and refugees. Using a critical social theory lens, an emerging definition of workplace integration of IENs is presented to highlight how organizational commitment to diversity and inclusion at all levels can result in “two-way” integration. Potential outcomes of two-way integration at the level of the employer organization as well as the IENs’ social, economic, cultural and political domains of nursing work life clarify the concept of workplace integration of IENs. Although the proposed Workplace Integration of Internationally Educated Nurses Framework has yet to be tested, it is presented here for consideration by nurse employers and leaders. The framework provides an alternate approach for viewing IENs’ workplace integration beyond the transition phase and over the long term.
