Abstract

Corpus linguistics has brought about significant changes not only to our understanding of language, but also to language learning and instruction. Corpus data has informed the decision making of language teaching professionals and provides language learners with numerous “real world” examples of language use. However, present online resources are limited both in quantity (the number of examples available) or quality (containing performance errors, hesitations and a confusing mixture of senses). This article describes an online database presently being constructed which will provide examples of high-frequency vocabulary hyper-linked to the most frequent multi-word units in English. Database examples will be modified to eliminate performance errors, hesitations, etc. while maintaining their authenticity as naturally occurring examples of language use.
