Abstract

The paper attempts to present a preliminary instrument that can be used to measure reflective practice among pre-service teachers. Under the 10th Malaysian Plan, five strategic goals were identified to ensure the success of the plan. The second aim is to improve knowledge ability and national innovation as well as to nurture the first-class mind set. To pursue this goal, the government has outlined specific strategies in the field of education to ensure that the nation will be able prepare world class human capital. Teachers are expected to transform the effectiveness of their teaching delivery to the students to ensure that the students can perform well in their studies (RMK10, 2010). One way to ensure that teachers become more effective in their practices is through reflective practice (Loughran, 2002). Reflection on practices is very qualitative in nature, which makes assessment on these reflections difficult to master (Bums & Bulman, 2000). The InQuRRI: Introducing Quick Reference for Reflective Inventory proposes a solution to this situation. The inventory consists of Quick Reference, Formula, The Rubric, and the Rubric Descriptor. The rubric can be used to transform an item that is qualitative in nature into a measurable one. This rubric was based on the findings of a research entitled ‘Reflecting to Benefit: A Study on Trainee Teachers’ Self-Reflection’ (Elia and Faizah, 2010). The rubric has been developed to quantify qualitative descriptors of reflective practice, which enables the users to measure their performance in reflective practice. It is hoped that through the use of this inventory, pre-service teachers will be more aware of their critical thoughts, hence encouraging them to be more effective practitioners.
