Abstract

Inclusion of semantic and pragmatic approach in the teaching of language can produce a quicker acquisition. The Malay Language Program at Universiti Putra Malaysia give emphasis on fluency and comprehension. The purpose is to equip students for knowledge seeking, enhanced intellectuality,acquisition of learning skills and dissemination of moral values. To achieve these goals, a strategic approach is required. The subjects taught must contain emphasis on aural skill and grammar. This study focused on the following aspects of language namely grammar competency, understanding contextual clues, sociolinguistic competency and pragmatic (language use in context). It also looked into the Malay cultural values gained in the process of learning Malay language. The subject of this study were visiting Australian students from Deakin University
