Abstract

In order to inspire, engage and retain students in STEM fields, we have organized Tech Fridays three times each semester for the last four years. Students attend a Tech Friday for three hours to participate in hands-on activities focused on a current technology that is a topic of major interest to students. The events and themes are chosen and are led by student peer-mentors in collaboration with faculty. Peer-mentors are supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation. The results of this experience show, on one hand, the student participants’ interest and excitement in learning new technologies. On the other hand, student mentors who plan and execute the events gain confidence and build leadership skills.
