Teaching Physical Education for Happiness and Well-Being
Abstract
Despite suggestions in the literature over the past couple of decades for foci that highlight the educational and health value of physical education in schools, there remains a sense of unease about its purpose and future. At a time when the subject of physical education seems to be struggling for a strong sense of identity, purpose, and direction at a global level, we suggest a focus for physical education on student happiness and well-being as areas in which it has significant potential to make a difference. This is also an area in need of attention due to the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns across the globe. At a time when there is growing concern over students’ well-being we suggest why, and how, physical education should draw on its inherent strengths to make student positive well-being its primary, but not solitary, aim through the promotion and enhancement of happiness.
