Richard Light is professor and Head of School: Sport and Physical Education in the College of Education at The University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. He is well known for his work in the field of sport and physical education pedagogy with an emphasis on situating learning within social and cultural contexts and on the subjective, affective and whole-person nature of experience. He is also known for his work on the body, culture and learning and particularly on sport in Japan where he lived and coached rugby for six years. He has a background in teaching and coaching children and young people with a range of publications on studies conducted across Europe, Australasia and Asia. His most recently published books include Ethics in youth sport (Harvey & Light (Eds.), 2013); Game Sense: Pedagogy for performance, participation and enjoyment (Light, 2013), Contemporary developments in games teaching (Light, Quay, Harvey and Mooney (eds), (2014) and Advances in rugby coaching: An holistic approach (Light, Evans, Harvey & Hassanin, 2015), Children, young people and sport: Studies on experience and meaning (Light, in press).
