Abstract

This publication investigates the approach of Life Long Learning (LLL) and the possibility of applying it to Cities/Regions. In order to explore Learning in Cities, a conceptual framework is formulated which includes the interdependence of three variables: Lifelong Learning, Social Capital and Local Development. The overlap of these three variables is defined to be the concept of spatiality in learning, i.e. the connection between formal, non-formal and informal modes of learning. The concept of Learning spatiality is considered to be crucial in designing educational, social and work environments under present conditions of global interdependence and local diversity in the context of new communication and information technologies. The paper analyses the space and time dimensions of LLL and attempts to link them to the spatial development in cities. The conceptual framework concludes, by presenting exemplars of networking projects for the Development of Learning in Cities. Specifically it describes the content, the processes and methodological tools of the Hellenic Project Polisnet-Learning Cities.
