Abstract

Previous research has shown that there are two pathways that determine human behavior in general—the attitudinal pathway and the normative pathway. Attitudes are evaluations of behaviors, caused by beliefs about the consequences of behaviors, whereas subjective norms are people’s opinions about what most others who are important to them think they should do. Although these two pathways have been shown to determine human behavior in the social psychology literature, no research to date has determined if these two pathways also determine human behavior in regard to compliance with alarms in the workplace. As an initial step in this direction, we conduct three experiments that employ clustering analyses to support extending the attitude-subjective norm distinction to compliance with tornado warnings and fire alarms.
