Abstract

The concept of multiple representations involves representing a concept in distinct modes. In mathematics education this concept is emphasized by many researchers. It was mentioned in many research studies that using multiple representations in mathematics will enhance conceptual and grounded mathematical understanding. Knowing this helped shaped the aim of this study which is to determine seventh grade student’s translational skills in different mathematical representational modes. For this purpose first a test measuring translational skills of students in algebra was administered and then semi-structured interviews were conducted with selected eight students. The findings denoted that students had major difficulties in representational translational process.
