Abstract

Noteworthy international efforts to support peace education have already begun by both governmental and non-governmental organizations. However, many believe that school-based peace education can and should be included in the curriculum in schools across the globe in order to make a lasting difference on the planet. By instituting such practices modern societies may be able to transform its students into future change agents for peace. The primary goal of this paper will be to focus attention on successful models of school-based peace education programs so that they may serve as inspiration to educators who may be considering such programs in their own countries. Secondarily, in an effort to provide a foundation with which to better understand the entire peace education movement, the paper will present three background information pieces. These include: 1) various working definitions of peace education, 2) an examination of the conditions needed for successful peace education programs for schools, and, 3) a workable framework for schools for the successful institutionalization of peace education.
