Abstract

This paper discusses the importance of general education at university level and the relevance of environmental education as part of the university curricular. In this paper, general education refers to the shared curriculum that reflects the university’s aspiration while preparing undergraduate students with skills and competencies to function effectively in modern society. This paper argues for the inclusion of environmental education in general education curriculum based on shared ideals and objectives. Two main points are highlighted in this paper. First, both environmental education and general education underscore the importance of interdisciplinarity and skills development. Second, both environmental education and general education share similar virtuous aims of developing educated persons and lifelong learners. These ideals will enable students to appreciate multiple perspectives and not only confine their worldviews to their own disciplines. In this paper, we share our insights as implementers of general education at a public university in Malaysia.
