Abstract

In order to expose students to diversity and social justice, the researchers conducted interactive read-alouds with second grade students using children’s books featuring family diversity and issues of social justice. During the read-alouds, students shared many personal experiences related to the texts. All read-alouds were recorded, and the transcripts were analyzed, which led to the identification of the following four themes in students’ discussions: (a) sharing personal information and exposing vulnerabilities; (b) belief in parents’ unconditional love; (c) recognizing injustices in society; and (d) expressing interest, empathy, and acceptance. It was also found that students’ peers and teacher benefitted from the knowledge they gained when students shared personal experiences related to the texts. Findings from our study underscore the importance of providing students opportunities to engage in discussions of diverse literature that is reflective of their lives.
