Abstract

This paper reports on an exploratory study to determine whether group project work does have a role in helping students decide what they should be learning. Current thinking claims that students are active learners and are continuously in search of the truth, understanding and knowledge. Gone are the days when students never questioned nor reflected on their learning. Today’s students are said to be inquisitive, creative and critical of the environment, teaching and their learning. Learning is said to be more meaningful if learners engage in activities that would allow them to show their innovativeness, talent and passion in their chosen field of study. In this study of Industrial Design learners learning “Workplace Communication in English”, the teacher has capitalized on the students’ passion to create ‘artifacts’ relevant to their discipline and to help them ‘sell’ their creativity through activity in project work.
